KARACHI: Following the Supreme Court’s directives regarding delimitation of constituencies and door-to-door verification of voters’ lists in Karachi, the Pakistan Army on Saturday contacted the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) seeking details for carrying out the task, DawnNews reported.

Meanwhile, the commission, in this regard, has also called a meeting with the army on December 13.

The apex court had asked the ECP to carry out a fresh door-to-door verification of voters in Karachi with the assistance of the army and the Frontier Corps after releasing an interim order dealing with delimitation of constituencies in the city.

The court had observed last month that constituencies in the metropolis should be delimited in a manner that they comprise “mixed population” to avoid political polarisation.

Sources told DawnNews that the issue was also discussed in a recent high level meeting of the military leadership. The meeting decided to formulate a line of action after getting required details from the ECP, added the sources.

Later, a spokesman of ISPR rejected any such contact, saying the army would respond positively if received any proposal in this regard from the government, DawnNews reported.
