KARACHI, Dec 7: Revenue teams conducting a survey of land in Karachi are facing problems in carrying out the exercise because of hilly terrain in the city’s suburban areas and non-cooperation of certain land-controlling agencies that are not allowing revenue staff to enter their premises for a survey, it emerged on Friday.

While the Sindh government has been taking all-out measures to complete the survey, which is being conducted on a directive of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, within the stipulated time, there are chances that it might take some extra time.

A senior revenue official told Dawn that the land survey had already begun and most areas that fell within the jurisdiction of Karachi’s central, east, south and west districts had been surveyed by revenue teams. However, a major part of district Malir, which is more than the remaining areas of Karachi, was yet to be surveyed, he added.

He said that a meeting chaired by the Senior Member of Board of Revenue (SMBR) was held on Friday to discuss problems being faced by the revenue teams in conducting a survey. The official said that the meeting was told that different agencies, including the Pakistan Steel Mills and cantonment boards, were not allowing revenue staff to enter their premises and carry out their work with the help of equipment and devices.

It was decided in the meeting that a letter would be written to all such agencies asking them to cooperate with the Sindh government in the survey, which should be completed within three months, because the exercise was being carried out in compliance with the apex court’s order.

The meeting also decided to get help from the Survey of Pakistan particularly for carrying out the land survey in Gadap.

Acting Karachi Commissioner Kamran Shamshad told Dawn that all the five deputy commissioners would ensure protection to the survey teams in their respective districts.

He said that a technical committee was also formed to sort out hitches in the survey process.
