Two cops killed in attack

BANNU, Oct 8: Two police constables were killed in an attack on Sabzimandi checkpost in the jurisdiction of Mandan police station here on Monday.

Local residents said that armed motorcyclists opened fire on the Sabzimandi police checkpost on Dera-Bannu Road at 6:45pm killing constables Sharafat and Fakhar Zaman on the spot. The assailants managed to escape after the incident.

Police later cordoned off the area and started a search operation. However, there was no report of any arrest till late night. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

It is the sixth such attack on Bannu police. The same checkpost was targeted a few months ago in which a constable was killed.—Correspondent

Woman kills husband

KHAR, Oct 8: A woman killed her husband for unknown reasons in Kolala area of Uthmankhel tehsil of Bajaur tribal region the other day, a Bajaur administration official said.

He said that wife of Mohammad Umar, a resident of Kolala village, opened fire on her husband, killing him on the spot.

“No reason has been found as yet and an investigation into the incident has been launched,” the official said. — Correspondent

PkSF students hold demo

PESHAWAR, Oct 8: The activists of Pakhtun Students Federation (PkSF) held a protest demonstration here on Monday against a clash at Government Degree College Charsadda and demanded action against the culprits involved.

The protesters came out in a procession from Government College Peshawar and held a demonstration near the Peshawar Press Club. They were shouting slogans against Islami Jamiat Talba, the student wing of Jamaat-i-Islami.

The protesters, led by Raees Khan, alleged that IJT was involved in the clash with workers of their organisation and as result one Sangeen Shah was injured seriously.

He said that it was duty of the college administration and local police to take action against all those involved in the clash. —Bureau Report

84 arrested in Peshawar

PESHAWAR, Oct 8: Police claimed to have arrested 84 accused, including 33 proclaimed offenders, from different parts of Peshawar Division on Monday and recovered arms and ammunition from their possession.

A police spokesman told Dawn that raids had been conducted in parts of Peshawar, Nowshera and Charsadda. He said that police had also recovered three Kalashnikovs, seven rifles and 8,097 cartridges from the accused.

Of the 84 accused, he said, 33 were proclaimed offenders wanted to police in different heinous crimes. Cases against them had already been registered in different police stations, he added. —Bureau Report

Free medical camp

SWABI, Oct 8: A free medical camp was organised in Topi tehsil for hepatitis-B and C patients here on Monday.

The camp was organised by Peshawar-based Shamsher Ali Trust in collaboration with Ghazi Barotha Tarraqiati Idara (GBTI) at government girls primary school Topi east and government primary school for boys.

Salim Bahadar, director of GBIT Swabi region, told media persons that five doctors and paramedical staff along with the GBTI members facilitated the people of Topi east union council.

They have collected blood samples of more than 360 people which have been sent to Islamabad for the laboratory tests and the result would be handed over to the people very soon. He said that those suffering from hepatitis-B or C would be treated free of cost.

He said the next camp would be held in Batakara union council after 10 days, followed by Maini or Zarobai union council.—Correspondent

Mini sports complex planned

PESHAWAR, Oct 8: Deputy Speaker Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, Khushdil Khan has said that government is planning to construct a mini sports complex along with a big library in Badhber area and urged the people to provide of land for the purpose.

Addressing the prize distribution ceremony of First Bacha Khan District Badminton Tournament here in the Hujra of late Hikmat Khan at Balokhel, he said that the provincial government besides promotion of sports was also keen in providing assistance to local players.

He said that sports were effective means for the younger generation to express their emotions. Through sports, he added, they could develop their character.

Later, he distributed prizes amongst outstanding players of the tournament.— APP
