KARACHI, Aug 9: Karachi Metropolitan Commissioner Matanat A. Khan has said that a comprehensive survey will be conducted to fulfil municipal requirements of Korangi tanneries and arrange scientific disposal of chemical waste discharged from the industries.

Speaking to a delegation of Pakistan Tanneries Association (PTA) that called on him on Thursday, he said that currently problems faced by the industries in the Korangi tannery zone were being looked into.

He said that the tanneries discharged thousands of tonnes of industrial waste into storm drains. Its proper disposal on a scientific basis needed arrangements for a separate sewerage system, he added.

Earlier, PTA chief Khursheed Khan said that thousands of people were associated with the leather-processing industry, which also paid a sizeable amount in different taxes to the government. He said if the problems faced by the industry were solved, it could play its role more efficiently and contribute more to the national economy.

The meeting was also attended by government officials Altaf Memon, Dr Shaukat Zaman, Shafique-ur-Rehman, and PTA members Fawwad Jawed, Gulzar Feroz and others.
