ISLAMABAD, July 31: Leader of Opposition in National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan has hinted at starting consultations with opposition parties, including Tehrik-i-Insaaf, to evolve consensus on the name of a caretaker prime minister.

Speaking to reporters here on Tuesday, he, however, made it clear that he would not consult any member of the parties constituting the ruling coalition, including the JUI-F. He also tried to dispel the impression that both the government and the opposition were working on the same process.

Chaudhry Nisar said he would follow the same process while proposing the name of a caretaker prime minister which he had followed for selection of Justice (retd) Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim as Chief Election Commissioner.

Under the 20th Amendment, the prime minister and the leader of opposition would propose two names each for the caretaker prime minister and “the final word would come from the Election Commission if a difference of opinion persisted”, he said.

He said the PPP should give the opposition credit for naming a most uncontroversial CEC.

The PML-N leader sternly warned against any “conspiracy to extend the term of the assemblies or to get the president re-elected from them”.

About a four-year delay in passage of the accountability commission bill, he said he did not expect the law to be finalised during the PPP-led government and a party which came to power after the next polls might be able to do this.
