KARACHI: In what was possibly the first protest of its kind, a religious organisation was met with aerial firing by the police in Karachi, when they gathered to demonstrate against the shutdown of a Shia watchdog website.

The Shia Action Committee was protesting the alleged ban of the website www.shiakilling.com, when they were stopped at downtown Karachi’s Numaish Chowrangi, DawnNews reported on Tuesday.

The protestors, who were reportedly in hundreds, set off from Shah-i-Khurasan area (Jamshed Town), chanting anti-government slogans on their way. When they reached Numaish Chowrangi, police tried to stop them, which led to an altercation between both parties. Police officials then resort to aerial firing. While the crowd dispersed to the nearby alleyways, some still managed to move past Numaish and continued with their agitation.

A website, which monitors and maintains a “death count” of Pakistani Shia Muslims targeted in sectarian violence, has been banned by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, which operates on the directives of the Ministry of Information. Upon attempting to access the website, users are met with a “Access denied” message, a usual occurrence for banned websites.

Pakistan has previously banned social networking websites including Facebook and Twitter for carrying content considered disrespectful towards Islam and the Holy Prophet (PBUH).

People (Pakistanis) should act mature enough to see whats good & bad for them, & find for themselves who is committing evil & discord and make conscious conclusions based on their own logical sound minds. Since when did the Government become the in-charge of censoring/blocking (good/bad) information from us? Instead the Government should be spending more time into educating the illiterate Masses, who can be competent enough to make decisions for themselves.

So if Dawn.com has mentioned that so & so number of Shias were killed in Quetta, Karachi, Parachinar etc etc.... than Dawn.com should be Banned as well?

All the websites spreading hatered and sectarianism must be banned. My friend why don't you talk about what Iran is doing with Sunnis in Iran, the state is killing more and committing atroticies there and no website is to show that and now you advocate for a site which is instigating sectarian violence. This is conspiracy against the country to create Shia Sunni rift and violence. Everyone knows in Pakistan we have extermist groups both in Sunnis and Shias and both kill each other which is normal and there is no need to make it so much public that peaceful Sunnis and Shias start killing each other. At the end the Shias will lose more as they are in minority so better to create harmony and discourage such initiatives.

Banning the websites is not going to help. What is needed and needed very urgently is a strict ban on all kind of hate material in words, prints,or the actions. This has now become a vital issue and a matter of survival of the country.

Let me understand what you are saying - "Any website that mentions any killing of a perticular sect or ethnic members should be banned".
Pakistani
Jul 17, 2012 07:09pm
Wow... yet another, in order to hide its bad faces Govt uses such moves. Every killing should be reported be it shia sunni, pakhtoon, balochi punjabi sindhi, saraiki gilgiti, kashmiri muslim momin pakistani. If they ban it lets start up by making 5 websites for each ban they will understand.

Pakistan is unbelievable. On one end it won't stop laskhar e jhangvi, sipah sahaba from killing innocent shias all across the country yet they have blocked the shiakilling site which basically reports and informs people of every shia killed there. These killers and their sympathiser don't fear God and obviously no one can do anything to them in Pakistan anyway. What a shame

Khalid, this website does not preach hatred toward any other sect. It only reports any shia in Pak getting killed so people are informed and hopefully we see a positive change in Pakistan

They should include death counts of all being killed in Karachi and keep track of all denomination. Later, they can show that data is highly skewed and shows that certain denomination is being targeted.

how about banning the LeJ murderers from brutally murdering, beheading and terrorizing all of Pakistan? How about banning these LeJ terrorists from spreading hate against other Pakistani's in the name of religion? Sad and disappointing that you support banning a website that simply reports a particular section of the society being butchered in the most gruesome manner on a daily basis by LeJ animals

All banned sectarian orgnisation has been protesting from Karchi to Islamabad and are being presented as Heroes by Pak media . Why not you go and protest for death of innocent Kashmiris .

Why they could not find a better name for their website "www.shiakilling.com" is a bad name for social website. Find a more reasonable name and do not be aggressive toward the contents so people can visit without any objection and also government of Pakistan would not even pay attention of a less objective and informative website.

utter nonsense! Government's failures against sectarian terrorists and failure to stop the killings of Shia, Ahmedis, Hazaras, etc are laid bare by this attempt to hide the truth when a website starts to document all cases of Shia deaths in Pakistan.. How about shutting down the jihadi-led Difa-e-Pakistan council? Why are those terrorists allowed to hold huge public gatherings and their jihadi mullah allowed to deliver extremist sermons to the masses?

banning a website is like closing your eyes. how does that help? people have a right to information... and if one claims the website is providing wrong information, then is it not our problem to believe it or not? and then should you also not ban PTV? instead of looking at how to create awareness and how to sort our problems, we ban any thing that doesnt fit our 'box' of appropriateness. subhanallah!

Khalid you are right, all the secterian & racial groups, political parties, TV channels, Newspapers and websites must be banned in Pakistan. Law should me enforced without discrimination. Many things wrong are happening in the country in the name of " free media, freedom of expression and democracy". Any Pakistani being killed or his property and honor attacked must be condemned by all of us. We must not allow our mosques, imam bargahs and other public places to be used by fanatic. We love Pakistan and evry citizen must be protected.

Any of you agreeing with the ban of this website, please take a moment and think about this......if you are seriously against sectarian division the first thing you should do is protest against these killing rather than agreeing with the ban. These innocent people are being killed because they are shia. Shouldn’t you be asking the killers (who openly admits that they are the killers) to stop killing innocent Muslims because of their sect. If you take a stand that there should not be a single person killed or even hurt because of their sects and any one responsible for these crimes is NOT a Muslim, only then you are truly against sectarian division and we will all respect you. It is sad to see that you were able to take time to write against a website which was only reporting the crimes but did not say a world against the killers…..is this just??

Why block the messenger ? why are other taliban sites which promote sectarian hatred not blocked ??? one day any anti zardari or govt site may be blocked if you allow this to happen
