ISLAMABAD, July 10: In his first interaction with the media after having emerged as the unanimous choice of major political parties for the post of Chief Election Commissioner, Justice (retd) Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim expressed reservations on Tuesday over the proposed law on dual nationality tabled in the Senate earlier in the day.

When his opinion was sought on the new law, the veteran jurist told reporters at the Supreme Court premises: “Four Fakhruddin Ebrahims will have to sit together to understand the dual nationality law.”

He said change was coming and people should get ready for it, adding that he was against dual nationality and his main focus would be on conducting transparent polls. He appealed to the media and civil society to also play their due role.

In reply to a question, he said he was ready to accept the challenging job of CEC, but added that he was yet to receive an official intimation in this regard. He said fair and transparent elections were necessary to save the country, adding that people’s expectations were too high.

“It makes me cry when I see the prevalent situation,” the eminent jurist said in a sad mood. “I have to make preparations and rest assured whenever polls are held these will be transparent.”

He said he personally favoured a four-year term for assemblies because five years were too trying for people at large.

He said holding the office of CEC in the present circumstances would be a big challenge for him, but “everyone has to perform his responsibility”.

Asked when the elections would be held, he said: “This decision will be taken by the prime minister.”
