KARACHI, June 20: A doctor was gunned down at his clinic in a Malir locality on Wednesday, police said and felt certain that the killing was not part of frequent targeted attacks on members of the medical profession.

The police said the murder was the result of an old dispute over a piece of land and some monetary issue.

Dr Raheem Bakhsh was at Raheem Clinic in Haji Sher Mohammad Goth near Bawan Shah Mazar when three armed men entered the clinic, said DSP Rao Iqbal, the area’s sub-divisional police officer. One of them fired multiple shots at the doctor and escaped on a motorbike along with his accomplices, leaving the doctor dead on the spot, added the DSP.

“The 45-year-old victim had sustained four bullet wounds,” said the officer.

He explained that the victim and his rival family lived in the neighbouring villages of Siddiq Goth and Haji Sher Mohammad Goth, respectively. “It’s an old dispute between the two families over a piece of land and some monetary issues. There had been multiple killings reported from both sides over the part two years,” he said.

Just Tuesday night, a woman from the suspected party sustained a gunshot wound soon after a meeting called to resolve the issues ended without a positive outcome.

“Now one of the attackers who killed the doctor is said to be the son of that woman. He along with his all family has already left the area, but we have some clues that can help us in arresting him soon,” said DSP Rao.

The officer said that nobody had turned up at the Al Falah police station to lodge the case till Wednesday evening.

Truck driver shot dead

In the early hours of the day, a truck driver was gunned down in Shireen Jinnah Colony within the remit of the Jackson police station, officials said.

They added that 37-year-old Subhan Khan was attacked while he was having a chat with friends on a road that remains illegally occupied by oil tankers.

“Armed gunmen riding a motorbike came close to him, fired at him and sped away,” said a police official.

The body was later shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for medico-legal formalities.

“So far we could not have found any clue to the attackers or the motive for the murder,” said the official.

He said the victim hailed from Peshawar and the police were waiting for the family to hand over his body and register the case.
