Majeed pleads guilty to conspiracy to cheat

LONDON: Sports agent Mazhar Majeed has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to cheat at the Pakistan match-fixing trial and conspiracy to making corrupt payments, the Press Association reported on Wednesday.

Majeed, 36, now faces sentencing along with three Pakistani cricketers, former captain Salman Butt and fast bowlers Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir.

The sports agent pleaded guilty at a pre-trial hearing in September but the judge has only just lifted reporting restrictions.

Butt, 27, and Asif, 28, were found guilty on Tuesday of taking bribes to fix part of a test match against England at Lord's in August 2010.

Amir, 19, admitted his part in the scam before the trial at Southwark Crown Court started.

Butt and Asif are facing up to seven years in jail or large fines. The trio have already been banned from playing by the International Cricket Council for a minimum of five years.

The court has been told the spot-fixing plot was orchestrated by Butt and Majeed.

While i am not condoning their actions and i believe they should be banned from playing cricket for some years, it just proves how corrupt our society is. When your leaders are so corrupt, bribe is the accepted way to do business with government officials, these talented players who have devoted their lives to their profession are paid peanuts, what would you expect from them. Here in North America, entertainers are paid in the millions - in Pakistan, one needs to secure another job to make ends meet, on top of being a professional player. At this junction, if someone offers you to make easy money, isn't that something to consider. And who really cares about your country - when in fact, your country doesn't appear to care for you. As i said before, it is not right, but under the circumstances, one can understand their motive. Sad - very sad.

Mazhar Majeed should get atleast 10 years of jail, plus a large fine. If he is let off the hook by giving him lesser time. It is encouraging others like him to corrupt the world.

Majeed should be punished but not the boys. They can at best be barred from playing further. In any case this is travesty of justice. They were condemned before even a proper inquiry some what like NYPD did to IMF Chief, though they had the decency to withdraw the charges later. These boys should have appealed to a Pakistani Court on the grounds that they cannot expect justice from the British Court. Many women from developing countries have filed suits and won these in the British courts.And they should have stayed in Pakistan.
