KARACHI, April 3: Various NGOs, on Wednesday, strongly condemned the gang-rape of two sisters by policemen in Ramaswami, and demanded exemplary punishment for the culprits.

Aurat Foundation, an NGO for women’s rights, in a joint statement, condemned the heinous act.

The project coordinator of Aurat Foundation, Zahratul Fatima, Safina Javed, Hidayat Narejo and Mahar Taj Memona said that the act has eroded the confidence of the masses in the entire police force.

They said that the high officials of the police department should take strict notice of this ugly incident and try to restore the confidence of the citizens in them.

They demanded a fair inquiry into the incident and that the culprits be given exemplary punishment.

They also demanded that a high-level committee comprising government officials, media persons, elected representatives and other civil society representatives be formed to monitor police investigation into the case.

Idara-i-Amn-o-Insaf also condemned the gang-rape of the two sisters by policemen in Ramaswami.

In their statement, the Idara members also severly condemned the non-registration of FIR by the area police station when the father of ill-fated girls approached the police, that led to violence erupting in the locality.

The Idara demanded the arrest of the absconding culprits and to award exemplary punishment to them.

Condemning the rape of two sisters in front of their family members, the Development for Human Right Organization demanded that the case of gang-rape be sent to an anti-terrorism court for trial.

It also added that stern action should be taken against SHO Zahid Hussain and other police officials who refused to lodge the FIR on the complaint of the father of the ill-fated girls.
