KARACHI: A 55-year-old local leader of the Jamaat-i-Islami injured in the grenade attack on the party’s rally at Baitul Mukarram Masjid on main University Road in Gulshan-i-Iqbal taken out on Wednesday to condemn Indian atrocities and the year-long siege of India-held Kashmir died during treatment on Thursday, said Aziz Bhatti police and party officials.

Rafique Tanoli, 55, was admitted to a private hospital, where he was put on ventilator as his condition turned critical. He died at 12.15pm on Thursday, said JI Karachi spokesperson Zahid Askari.

He said that Rafique Tanoli, father of four children, was emir (chief) of the JI in Quaidabad and originally hailed from Mansehra.

Mr Askari revealed that 28 workers had been admitted to three different hospitals and condition of one of them, Abdul Ahad, was also serious.

Meanwhile, Aziz Bhatti police SIO (station investigation officer) Fariduddin said that an FIR had not been registered of the attack.

The police were waiting for a complainant and if no one approaches the police, they would get the case registered on behalf of the state.

The officer said that Bomb Disposal Squad had confirmed that it was a grenade attack. He added the BDS had not given any report to ascertain as to whether the JI rally grenade was the same which had recently been used in other terror attacks in the metropolis.

Navy employee kills 70-year-old mother

A 70-year-old mother was axed to death allegedly by her own son over what was described as a domestic dispute in Naval Colony on Thursday, said Sharea Faisal police.

They added that the 50-year-old suspect, Irshad Hussain, Chief Petty Officer in Pakistan Navy, killed his mother Ghulam Fatima at PNS Nigran in Naval Colony, Dalmia.

He was detained by the Naval Police who later handed his custody to the area police for investigation.

SHO Mohammed Sarwar, aka Commando, said that a quarrel erupted between the victim and her daughter-in-law over some domestic matter early in the morning. The suspect attacked his mother with an axe. She suffered critical injuries and was taken to PNS Shifa where she died.

Man killed in Gulistan-i-Jauhar

A 25-year-old man was killed in the Bhittaiabad area of Gulistan-i-Jauhar on Thursday morning, said police.

They added that Jan Mohammed was asleep on the roof of the third floor of his home when two unidentified men stabbed him and escaped.

He suffered critical injuries and was taken to a nearby private hospital where he died. Sachal SHO Haroon Korai believed that the murder appeared to be an outcome of a property dispute.
