Karachi crackdown on transporters for overcharging yields over Rs200,000

KARACHI: The Sindh government has claimed to have recovered the extra money passengers had paid to transporters who exorbitantly increased fares during the three days of Eidul Azha.

The recovered money has been returned to the passengers and the provincial government also fined the errant transporters, officials said on Sunday.

They said the action against the transporters fleecing passengers was simultaneously taken across the province during which a total of Rs208,000 was got returned to the passengers.

The action was taken in Hyderabad, Sanghar, Sukkur, Larkana, Shikarpur, Mirpurkhas, Thatta, Benazirabad, Badin and Sukkur districts.

Transport Minister Awais Shah said the errant transports were collectively fined for Rs100,000.

Besides, he added, route permits of 10 passenger vehicles were also cancelled.

Minister Shah said the transport secretary was ordered to issue show-cause notices to the regional secretaries of the transport department in Umerkot, Kashmore, Jacobabad and Ghotki for not taking a similar action in their respective districts.
