Dhoni go-slow against England stirs Indian fan fury

Indian cricket fans and pundits on Monday turned on wicketkeeper-batsman MS Dhoni for his poor strike rate in the final overs of his side's narrow 31-run World Cup loss to England.
Chasing a stiff 338, India clawed their way back into contention needing 71 runs from the last five overs of Sunday's game at Edgbaston, with the veteran big-hitter Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav at the crease.
But the pair added just 39, scrambling singles and unable to clear the rope, falling short of the target with five wickets remaining and handing India their first loss of the tournament.
The normally explosive Dhoni was unbeaten on 42 off 31 deliveries.
The Times of India pilloried the run-chase as the "Birmingham crawl" — Edgbaston is in the UK's second city —while Indian social media lit up in outrage at the star's uncharacteristically sluggish approach.
"Disappointing finish. A run-a-ball partnership can't win games," tweeted cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle.
"It's not about winning but it's about showing the intent to win," a fan wrote on Twitter.
Former Indian cricket stars were equally unforgiving.
Sanjay Manjrekar called his approach to the last few overs "baffling", while Saurav Ganguly, a former national team skipper and now a commentator, said he could offer no explanation for his ex-teammate's tame batting.
The loss handed England a lifeline in their pursuit of a top four finish progress to the semi-finals of a tournament on home soil.
Some fans applauded Dhoni for his slow play in the key final overs — England's win has made it harder for India's arch-rivals Pakistan to creep into the final four.
"Well done, Lt Colonel M.S. Dhoni has done a successful surgical strike against Pakistan," tweeted Animesh Yadav, referring to India's violation of Pakistani airspace in February.
Dhoni is an honorary lieutenant colonel in the Indian army.
It is the second time this World Cup that Dhoni has come under fire for batting slowly in the slog overs.
Dhoni's 28 off 52 balls against Afghanistan, prompted criticism from the normally reticent Sachin Tendulkar.
"There was no positive intent," the batting legend said of his former teammate's innings.

Agree 100. I think dhoni was taking revenge for 2009 championship trophy where Pak seemingly lost to Aus so that India couldn’t make the semi. Dhoni was the captain of that team.

A very well calculated loss. Indian run rate did not come down they stayed in the 2nd position the only thing that happened was England was able to get itself in the top 4 teams list. India seems to be loosing its match winning talents. It gives an indication that they might loose the remaining games. Dhoni couldnt connect very well and when they needed boundaries they limited themselves to singles. Thats a positive sign for the other teams and a negative sign for India. Very dissapointed .

Dhoni has been struggling past three matches. He was struggling against Afghanistan too. Where people called it his test cricket innings. He has aged and doesnt perform like before.
In england match batting, the ball hit his finger. He was bleeding, sucked the injury to numb pain, spat blood on field to continue. He should have exited citing injury than continue with pain with slow pace.

I have no doubt in my mind that India lost the match intentionally shattering the hopes of Pakistan to reach into Semi final. From the word go, India did not show any intent to win the match, as the match progressed to last delivery, the doubt turned into reality. did India do so that, India could not have to face Pakistan in Semifinal or Final. In the bigger context of the tournament, India can decide to lose to keep Pakistan out of semis provided no money was taken for this purpose by players. However, the character demands that there should be an intent to win every game for historical records to be fair. What Younis Khan did in 2009 is irrelevant since Pakistanis show casual attitude in important games too (as Picky Ponting likely tweeted) but India's natural game isn't what we saw yesterday so something was definitely cooking.

Here's what actually happened: The PM asked the BCCI to tell Lt. Col Dhoni & co. to underperform in 2 games.
It doesn't matter who wins, let's just wait and see how the ICC explains this to their fans. More than 70% are Indian so they may not care.

You do not need a PhD to understand that this match was fixed right from the outset. Indian fielders gave away runs, Dhoni let the ball pass him several times, 2 world class bowlers gave away 160 runs in 20 overs, Indian team did not ask for a review of umpire’s decision when struggling. And finally Kohli the captain defended Dhoni by providing lame excuses!! This match must be reported to the ICC !!

Good to see Ind loooose delibrately to Eng as NZ is enough to take care of average Eng. Pak will enter semi finals on its own by beating Ban.
What needs to be investigated is why Ind started its WC when teams had already played 3 matches and has stayed couple of games behind others hence giving a very good view of positions and room to maneuver.

As a Pakistan American all I will say if Pakistan does not qualify, they have no one but herself to blame they played very badly in World cup from the beginning. If India lost to England was deliberate so be it they still have long way to go to get the World cup. Pakistan still have chance to make it to Semi final if she does I hope she will play with India and show her full talent.

Pakistanis are played in hands of sponsors. pak reaches to semis or not it doesn't matter to them, they just never wanted to loose large viewership from subcontinent in middle of the world cup, eventually they succeeded in that. See even till 5th July 4th team won't be decided, that's all sponsors wanted. And if there is any fixed match in this world cup, then it was Eng vs Sri Lanka. It was the English team which opened the door for others that day, and closed the same yesterday.

Every team has a plan and executes it as they see fit. If India felt losing against England served them better, so be it. But this is mere speculation, and I don't think people should be speculating. May be Dhoni is just past his prime. Who knows?
But just imagine if the tables had turned and Pak were in Indian shoes. I'm sure we would be seeing the same comments but from opposite ends.

Pakistan is in this situation because it has lost 3 matches in this world cup so far. It wasn't Dhoni but Pakistani players who were responsible for that. By the way, has Pakistan become habitual of demanding mercy from others, always? - USA, China, UAE, Soudi Arabia, etc.. 330+ is a big ask for any team but can somebody explain how can you have five wickets in hand and fell short by 30 odd runs and hit just one six in the last over where the leg side boundary was only 60 Meters. Looks like India planned it to perfection so that they don't lose it by a big margin, keep the NRR in tact and make sure lose the game so that Pakistan can't go through. Sick people played disgusting cricket.

Why blame Dhoni in isolation ? Knowing fully well that the target was 338, what was the score at the end of Power Play 1 ? It was just 28 for 1. Even after 20 overs the run rate did not improve significantly. Scoring 338 was not at all a big achievement for celebrated batting line up of India. Just because Dhoni was at the crease in the finishing overs of the game, it is not fair to single out Dhoni alone for this debacle

Some other teams did it do not justify any same behaviour. Only thing I have to say is that Dhoni is batting like this for long time. He is not able to score more than 6 per over. As an Indian not happy with Indians approach in last five overs. Not sure what Dhoni/Jadhav was trying. Surely it is not Dhoni/ Jhadav but team plan for something - May be to give back to Pakistan in the same coin as Pakistan did in 2009 Champions trophy or ICC want England in semis (but England May still get out) or May be some astrologer told them they cannot win all matches in the World Cup and they must lose at least a match if they want to win World Cup. Last is most probable-superstition.

Come on everyone. India could have forfeited the match and given Eng 2 points without playing. It’s their choice. Pak is in this situation because we got thrashed by the Windies in the first game and our NRR dropped like a lead balloon. Then we had a chance to increase our NRR against Afghanistan but we barely won that match. No point in blaming others for our demise if we don’t make the semis.

India tried hard to win the game till Pandya was batting. After that Dhoni was trying to ensure margin of defeat is reduced to keep net run rate healthy. No point getting all out for 250 trying to score 338 and impacting run rate which will be crucial going forward

I think they tried their best..how do you expect them to win all matches.. I think this was a necessary jolt at the right moment. They have to fix their middle order. Hopefully they will address that. Fans will always be demanding but these guys are humans and they will go wrong once in a while.. the pakistani cricket fans can assume anything..It would have helped them if the Indian team won but the Indian team still is not answerable to them for their defeat

that India's middle order which was already week ,become extremely vulnerable due to Dhawan's injury. Dhoni is different player now and he takes quite a few over to settle down.For England, the return of Roy is the best thing happen. There are three possible explanations for the result:
A - the Hindustanis were outclassed by England, and were so badly humiliated Kohli was left desperately trying to blame the defeat on the pitch (the same pitch that the English used so well)
B - they threw the match to keep Pakistan out, conning all their fans and sacrificing dignity for blind hatred
C - they threw the match for the sake of the run rate, proving themselves to be spineless cowards
Any of the above must make them proud.

Beyond any doubt, Dhoni and his mates were too slow in chasing target by getting singles. It was obvious. ICC is a body of bunch of Indians but I still want to see what action ICC will take against Indian team. 28 runs in first 10 overs was a clear indication that they had decided to lose to England. Chahal was badly beaten, why Dhoni did not remove him after seeing his poor performance, which ended 10 overs 88 runs.

Moreover, Pakistan made an astonishing comeback in that match in 2009 where they needed to defend 66 runs and Australia had eight wickets, despite that Pakistan made the comeback and almost won the game, if we were so committed to get India out of the world cup why we would have made that strong comeback despite us qualifying even if we would have lost by hundreds of runs against Australia.

Guys pls chill out. If you can pls use some common sense you will see that every team with exception of WI against BD has won batting first and getting a score above 300+ . Pakistan themselves did this against England. The last overs batting by Dhoni and Jadhav looked unexplainable but taking into account India's tailenders who have not been able to score any runs at all it was a deliberate decision to minimize the damage.

Pl understand, 80% of ICC income comes through BCCI. It's like, in every house, the family member who contribute more and feed others become leader.

People are complaining now because it hurts Pakistan this time. We Indian are not very surprised. It's not the first time Dhoni did this, he has been doing this for last 2-3 years. If they don't make him accountable for this now, he would do it again. Our great batting coach(someone who him self was not a good batsman) thinks Dhoni is doing very much fine. It's high time he should be asked to either step aside or do better. No doubt he was a legend but it seems his days are gone.
