MULTAN: A team of the Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) of the Khanewal police arrested a gang of drug smugglers who would use an ambulance to transport drugs from one place to another.

The police seized 52 kilogramme charas or hash and opium from the ambulance.

District Police Officer Masoom told a press conference on Wednesday he tasked the police with nabbing drug paddlers. On a tip-off that a cache of drug was being smuggled from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, he made a team, headed by CIA in charge Maher Saeed Ahmed, who with the help of Chan Klaan police intercepted the ambulance and recovered the cache of drugs and Rs54,000 from it.

He said that the police arrested three people - Gulab Khan, of Kohat, and Khairul Bashar and Safia Bibi, both of Swabi. The DPO said the accused would smuggle drugs to Punjab from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa through the ambulance.

He said that the woman would be dubbed as a patient at police check posts to avoid checking.

He said that one of the accused to tried to escape while jumping into thee nearby Maialsi Link Canal but constable Sohail chased and arrested him. The DPO awarded a certificate and Rs10,000 to the constable.
