GUJRAT: Jhelum City police arrested a man on Thursday on charges of rape and sodomy of his wife.

According to the police, a woman approached them with a complaint, charging her husband of marital rape and sodomy.

She alleged that her husband, who was already married when he contracted marriage with her, would often commit unnatural act with her on the pretext that he did not want a child from her and he threatened to kill her if she disclosed this to anyone. She alleged that her husband would often physically torture her.

The woman said the suspect had divorced her verbally twice in the past but later on approached her by saying that he had got a religious decree from a Mufti (religious scholar) for the rapprochement. The police registered a case against the husband under Section 377 (unnatural offence) of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) and arrested him.

Inspector Ulfat, the spokesman for the Jhelum police, told Dawn the woman had filed the complaint two days ago and the case was lodged on Wednesday; however, the suspect was arrested and produced before the area magistrate on Thursday.

The magistrate gave the custody of the suspect to the police on four-day physical remand. The complainant was sent to the Jhelum District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital for the medical examination.
