A medical student was killed when a Metro bus she was travelling on ran her over in Rawalpindi Friday, police said.
Sameera, a 19-year-old student of the Shifa College of Medicine, was travelling to Islamabad when the driver pulled the emergency brakes near the Rehmanabad bus station, apparently due to ongoing construction work in the area.
Due to the impact, the bus hit a pole and the door of the metro bus flung open, throwing Sameera out of the vehicle and onto the road. The student then was run over by the same bus, eyewitnesses and police said. She died on the spot.
A police team from Sadiqabad Police Station reached the scene after the accident and shifted the girl's body to District Headquarters Hospital (DHQ).
The driver of the bus was arrested by police officials after fleeing from the scene earlier. A First-Information Report (FIR) has been registered against him and the cause of the accident is being ascertained, said Station House Officer (SHO) Sadiqabad Raja Tahir.
After the incident, students of Shifa College of Medicine staged a demonstration outside DHQ Hospital and threatened to shut down the Metro bus service if the driver is not apprehended at the earliest.
According to police, the deceased girl hailed from Rahim Yar Khan and was living at Sir Syed Chowk in Rawalpindi. Her body would be handed over to her father, who was travelling to Rawalpindi.
Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif took notice of the tragedy and ordered an inquiry into the accident.

First off this is a very sad accident that should never have happened. Second, now that it has happened the Metro Bus management needs to take this opportunity to retrain its drivers in safety.

Very sad indeed, everyone needs to understand that safety is important, one should never stand near the doors of a bus, these doors are automatic, so regardless of this accident, there is a very real chance that they may fling open due to the slightest of electrical problem as well. Please be careful.

This is an accident . Why is everyone overeating. The driver didnt murder or lynch her. We must question the construction happening the metro bus dedicated lane . Who allowed it and of so why was the safety concerns not mitigated how on earth was there a pole on a metro bus track .

What a grave and great tragedy?
In fact, this is exactly what happens when instead of a full-fledged indigenous "Research and Development (R&D)" program of your own, you beg, borrow or steal technology from others, which it self is more than 50 years old and obsolete disbanded German metro design system.
If it would have been any other civilized country, the family of the deceased medical student could have filed a suit against the Punjab Metro Bus Company claiming millions of dollars worth of damages. However, in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, anything and everything except the due process and rule of law in letter and spirit, is possible.

It almost sounds like a joke. How is it even possible for a person to be thrown off a bus that is moving and then to have that bus which should have passed the body to go over a body that should be behind the bus? Also why was there construction of the Metro bus route? Questions abound on this tragedy.

I want to condemn another aspect of such incidents i.e., the driver have to flee from the scene because our society start beating the driver even before hearing his narration of what happened and evaluation of whether it was his fault or not by the competent authority.
Don't blame the driver in such case of fleeing from the place of accident.

@bkt Really nonsensical from your part to not believe the scenario. What if the passenger was at the very front gate of the bus due to rush. Only then for a sudden brake one would be thrown out. In that case it is more than possible to be run over by the bus.

I passed through the scene a few mins after the accident this morning. Also, the scenario as explained is definitely possible as people often stand in the "no standing area"close to the doors although they are clearly marked. Though not sure if driver is to be blamed in this.

Driver should have seen construction work but also the construction workers should have set advance perimeter so the driver knows about the construction about at least 700m in advance.
Also how did the doors open.
Very tragic accident but I would blame construction people and somewhat the bus driver and the management

I'm pretty sure the cause was failure to follow protocol at all levels including construction, the driver, the company, the vehicle and sadly the student and/or other passengers. It is sad to see how easily a life is lost because of pathetic excuses for not following protocol in anything in our lives as a society.

This does not make sense at all. The law of Physics does not justify the girl being thrown out of the bus and then being run over by the bus itself. Why did the door "flung open"? Shouldn't it be locked? The amount of money we paid for those buses sure should have secured the locks. Also, why is the driver at fault? The contractor doing the construction should be apprehended for not providing enough warning of the danger ahead. Why did the driver run? It is a sad affair that we catch the lowest person on the totem pole and shut the case. He should have the comfort to stand tall and say that it was not his fault...it was an accident.

The LTC bus drivers are extremely dangerous, just yesterday, i was traveling on B10 and the driver was zig zagging on a small college road and cutting other drivers. Moreover, he wouldn't stop the bus to let the ladies get off the bus, let alone stop the bus for guys. I made a complain but i doubt anything is going to happen.

@Fahad The driver is 100% at fault for driving too fast. You should NEVER have to use an emergency brake in normal driving. The only time I can think of is if a child or animal runs into traffic. The driver should be paying attention to the road and adjusting his speed according to what's ahead. If he can see congestion or construction ahead, he should have slowed down well before reaching that point.

I have seen her deadbody there and that was heart breaking. I have seen that station, that track is already too narrow and still construction is under process on both sides, bricks were also there. Clearly the culprits are the authorities, but they are putting the blame on driver

@bkt The bus was in speed, at rehmanabad station, their was dug out so their was small space for bus, as it was in speed the driver couldn't control it and it slightly hit the pole, due to impact the girl fell down from the side emergency door and was eventually run over.
