PESHAWAR: Criticising the provincial government’s proposal to allow commercial activities in the University Town, the residents of the posh locality have asked Chief Minister Pervez Khattak to clarify the situation to remove unrest among them.

Speaking at a press conference at Peshawar Press Club on Thursday, the University Town Society president Dr Mustafa Kamal said that the government had decided to introduce a bill in the provincial assembly for commercialisation of the University Town areas, but the residents would not to allow this.

The government’s move in this connection, he claimed, would be a contempt of court as the Peshawar High Court had already given its verdict and restricted all kinds of commercial activities in the residential locality.

Flanked by other office-bearers of the society, Dr Kamal said that the idea of commercialisation had been floated by some vested interests. He said that the government had taken unilateral decision by ignoring 1,400 families residing in the locality.

He said that the government was least bothered to implement the superior judiciary’s verdict.
