KARACHI: The timings of the movement of heavy traffic within the metropolis would be strictly observed in order to ease pressure of traffic flow as well as to help control road mishaps.

This was decided at a meeting presided over by Sindh Transport Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah.

Commissioner Karachi Ejaz Ahmed Khan and other officials also attended.

It was also decided that from Monday, fines would be imposed on heavy traffic violating the timings of movement within the city limits.

There is a ban on the movement of vehicles of 10 or more wheels within the city limits during the daytime.

The meeting decided to strictly implement such a restriction to help ease flow of traffic and minimise the chances of road accidents.

The matters pertaining to mismanagement of parking as well as illegal parking also came up for discussion and in this regard the Traffic Engineering Bureau would prepare a plan for the busy areas in the metropolis and provision of underground parking facility in various areas would also be considered.

The meeting comes in the aftermath of a series of deadly accidents in the metropolis, some of them involving heavy vehicles, over the past few weeks.

At least 17 people have been killed over a two-week period on the city’s deadly roads. The latest tragedy occurred on Thursday, when three people died while two children were injured when a truck overturned under the KPT interchange.

Earlier, at least six people were killed in two different accidents involving rashly-driven vehicles on an under-construction patch of the arterial University Road.
