KARACHI: A 17-year-old girl was strangled to death after being raped on Wednesday, according to police and hospital officials.

They added that the body was recovered from an under-construction house in Sector D-4 of Surjani Town.

The victim was identified with the help of her purse and mobile phone found at the crime scene, said Surjani DSP Sohrab Meo. The officer added that she was a resident of North Karachi’s Sector 4.

Her family told the police that she had been missing since Tuesday afternoon. She had been receiving training at a beauty parlour situated at Power House in North Karachi, they added.

DSP Meo told Dawn that she was strangled to death with her stole which was found from the crime scene. The victim had been killed eight to 10 hours before her body was found, the officer said, adding that the corpse was later shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Police surgeon Dr Aijaz Khokhar confirmed to Dawn that she was raped and strangled to death.

‘Robbers’ kill trader

A medical store owner was shot dead by suspected robbers in North Nazimabad on Wednesday, according to the Shahrah-i-Noorjehan police.

They added that the two armed men arrived at a medical store near Five Star Chowrangi with the intention of committing a robbery. As the shop owner, Shahid Mir, attempted to take out his licensed pistol to challenge them, the suspects shot him and fled, said Gulberg SP Bashir Ahmed Brohi.

Two die, five hurt as roof collapses

The roof of a two-storey building in a slum area near Clifton collapsed, leaving two persons dead and five others injured in the early hours of Wednesday, police and hospital officials said.

They added that seven persons were buried under the debris after the roof of the building situated in Shah Rasool Colony collapsed.

Residents along with rescue workers retrieved them and shifted them to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where doctors declared two of them dead on arrival.

The deceased were identified as Mrs Zeenat, 60, and Azeem Sadiq, 25. The injured, who included two children, were admitted to the hospital for treatment, said JPMC executive director Dr Seemin Jamali. The police believed that the building was in a dilapidated condition which resulted in the tragedy. PTI lawmaker Khurram Sherzaman, who visited the spot, told the media that multistorey buildings had been illegally constructed in Shah Rasool Colony.

Weapons recovered

Pakistan Rangers, Sindh, on Wednesday claimed to have recovered arms and ammunition from a graveyard in F.B Area, according to a spokesperson. Acting on “credible information,” the paramilitary force recovered arms and ammunition from Yasinabad graveyard, which belonged to MQM (London), claimed the official.
