KOHAT: The police seized a big quantity of hashish and opium here on the Indus Highway from a Bannu-bound van here on Thursday.

DSP Hussain Ghulam Bangash told mediapersons that Jarma police stopped a van (C-7450) at Muslimabad checkpost and during checking of passengers they recovered 37 kilogrammes of hashish and 13 kgs of opium from an alleged smuggler, identified as Zahid of Khyber Agency.

The police said that the accused had been shifted to the police station where he admitted that he was smuggling drugs to southern parts of the province from the tribal areas.

Meanwhile, the city police arrested 17 proclaimed offenders and 56 Afghan nationals residing illegally.

The police also recovered weapons and drugs during the operation, which included nine Kalashnikovs, 15 shotguns, 13 pistols, two hand grenades and 51 kilogrammes of hashish. It also booked 63 outsider residents for not registering themselves with the nearest police station.

CRACKDOWN: Deputy commissioner Akmal Khan Khattak has ordered crackdown on adulterated milk and asked the district food controller to impose lifetime ban on the sellers.

Chairing a meeting of the price review committee at his office on Thursday, Mr Khattak asked the price magistrates to check profiteering, hoarding and proper display of price lists at every shop.

He directed the district food controller to check the complaints and take samples of milk from all shops and send them for checking.

The meeting was attended by assistant commissioners of Kohat and Lachi, district food controller Khan Zaman Khattak, Tajir Action Committee president Haji Abid and representatives of the bazaars and markets.

After fixing official prices of food items, the DC asked the business community to cooperate with the administration. He accepted their request for avoiding heavy fines on the traders. He asked them to keep the prices of essential food items within the reach of common man.
