RAWALPINDI: A student of the Government Post Graduate Asghar Mall College was on Wednesday gunned down by an alumni of the college during a clash between two groups.

A B.Sc student and a resident of Murree, Tauqeer Abbasi was trying to settle a dispute between two other students, Usman and Arsalan, when a bullet said to be fired by former student Faizan Ali Jadoon alias Jani hit him in the throat.

Tauqeer was taken to the Holy Family Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Students stage protest, demand police arrest the culprit

According to the police, a fight had broken out between Arslan and Usman and that the former had then called his friend Faizan Jadoon, who is from Hazara Colony, to come for help. Faizan opened fire when he reached during which Tauqeer received a bullet.

The police have arrested Arsalan’s father and a close relative of Usman’s. Raids are being conducted to secure the arrest of Faizan.

The killing of Tauqeer Abbasi created unrest among students, who took to the roads in protest, gathered at Chandni Chowk, blocked traffic, set tyres on fire and demanded the police arrest the culprits and bring them to justice. Among them were more than 80 students affiliated with the Islami Jamiat-i-Talaba.

The protestors put Tauqeer’s body under the Chandni Chowk flyover and offered his funeral prayers there.

Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) Emir Senator Sirajul Haq and other JI leaders also participated in the funeral prayers.

A murder case was registered based on the complaint of Tauqeer’s father, Rehman Abbasi and an investigation was launched.

In an unrelated incident, a 35-year-old woman was killed when she was hit by a passenger train at Marrir Chowk on Wednesday, the police said.

Khadim Bibi, the wife of Mohammad Afzal was crossing the rail tracks near Marrir Chowk when she was hit by a passenger train coming from the Rawalpindi station.

Separately, a 40-year-old man attempted suicide and jumped from the elevated metro bus bay at Liaquat Bagh. He fell on a moving rickshaw and sustained injuries, according to ASI Kashif Nisar.

Akbar Dostam was taken to the District Headquarters Hospital where his condition has been described as critical. The police said a case of attempted suicide has been registered with the City police against Mr Dostam, who hails from Gilgit Baltistan.
