KOHAT: The district has been witnessing brisk political activities for the last few weeks with prominent leaders of different parties visiting here.

Those who visited Kohat in the recent weeks included former chief minister Akram Khan Durrani, JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, Chief Minister Pervez Khattak and adviser to the prime minister, Amir Muqam, while the visit of former chief minister Ameer Haider Hoti could not be finalised due to security reasons.

Also, Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf chairman Imran Khan is due today (Saturday) in Hangu where the district government is controlled by JUI-F and the MPs belong to PTI.

Sources said that Mr Khan’s visit was intended to show his support for the party MPs who were losing confidence of the people due to their dull performance.

They said that arrangements had been finalised for Mr Khan’s visit. However, they feared that the visit could be postponed due to bad weather.

Apparently, the recent tour of Kohat by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has caused a stir in politics here with leaders of almost all parties rushing here to hold party meetings.

The prime minister had announced several projects, including that of gas supply, for several villages.

Earlier, KP Governor Iqbal Zafar Jhagra had also visited Kohat, but people were disappointed because he did not announce even a single scheme.

Despite brisk political activities no leader seems to be interested in solving the problems of the district like construction of broken roads and provision of health facilities to the people.

ANTI-POLIO DRIVE: Around 180,000 children below age five will be administered polio vaccine in all the 33 union councils of Kohat district during the upcoming campaign starting from Jan 16.

The national stop officer, Dr. Shoaib Khattak, while briefing deputy commissioner Akmal Khan Khattak said on Friday that 630 mobile, 64 fixed, 23 transit and three roaming teams had been constituted to reach the target children.

Meanwhile, safety equipment was distributed among the leaseholders of coalmines in Orakzai Agency on Friday.

A statement issued here said that the gadgets had been distributed on the directives of Fata Development Authority chief executive.

The equipment would prevent disasters in the coalmines which had been claiming precious lives.

The helmets, oxygen masks and cylinders were given to the leaseholders by the mining inspector, Roshan Khan, at a function.
