‘Taxes on property’

Published September 30, 2016

THIS is apropos the letter ‘Taxes on property’ (Sept 21). I fully agree with the writer. The citizens would be most willing to pay appropriate taxes if their utilisation is also appropriate and for the benefit of the public.

No sensible citizen of any country would be willing to pay taxes for the benefit of the few who are in power.

The government is talking about raising Rs70 billion through new taxes on property. According to media reports, a big sum of taxpayers’ money was spent on the recent surgery of the prime minister in the UK.

Everybody knows that besides surgery and treatment, his camp office was shifted from Pakistan to the UK and then back to Pakistan.

Is it proper utilisation of tax money?

Likewise, during the PPP government, all the president’s private residences in Larkana, Nawabshah and Karachi were declared camp offices and all expenses paid by state.

These so-called public representatives should be held responsible for their acts and expenditures through a foolproof system.
