KARACHI: An Indus river dolphin that got entangled in a fishing net in Dadu canal was rescued and released into upstream Sukkur barrage by a team of the World Wide Fund for Nature-Pakistan and wildlife department on Monday.

The four-foot-long mammalian was a male weighing 16.5 kilograms.

“The dolphin was spotted early in the morning by a fisherman who reported it to the Indus dolphin rescue helpline, established by our organisation. The team immediately reached the site and rescued the dolphin by carefully cutting the net,” said WWF-P project coordinator Imran Malik.

This year, four dolphins that had got stranded in low canal waters have been rescued, according to him.
