APROPOS the article ‘Field Marshal Raheel Sharif?’ (Aug 24). There is no question about General Raheel Sharif’s popularity, his quality of leadership and his professionalism. The government should follow the proper merit guidelines to appoint the next COAS.
The question of continuity of the operation against terrorists should not blur the issue, as armed forces produce one professional after another. That is how this institution works. One is confident that the fight will go on with the same command and control structure.
Continuing the fight against militancy does not require an extension in the COAS’s term. This is how you maintain equation in disciplined institutions. A fresh general will take over from where the incumbent left off.
General Sharif made an example of some of the army officers for their involvement in corrupt practices.
Prime Minister Sharif should follow suit by directing and allowing NAB, FIA and other agencies to carry out their responsibility to catch the black sheep.
