VEHARI: Funeral prayers for two sisters who were allegedly shot dead by their brother in the name of honour on Friday were offered in Jinnah Colony of Mitro Town, some 30km from here, on Saturday afternoon.

The two sisters were later buried in a local graveyard.

Nasir — the brother of Kausar, 20, and Gulzar Bibi, 22 — allegedly fled after killing them on Friday.

Muhammad Saeed and Jaffar, the brothers of the deceased, told Dawn the two sisters were going to be married on Saturday, but Nasir was opposed to their marriage. However, their parents and other family members wanted the weddings to go ahead.

Another relative, Iqbal, said the two sisters wanted to marry men of their choice but Nasir did not like the idea. On Friday evening the family had a heated argument and Nasir proceeded to gun down Kausar and Gulzar Bibi in the presence of other relatives.

Still in shock over the ghastly episode, the girls’ father Atta Muhammad and mother Zahooran Bibi were unable to talk to this correspondent on Saturday.

An uncle of the deceased said the two girls had developed a liking for the men they were about to marry in Karachi, where the four worked until recently, the two sisters as maids.

Later, the two sisters persuaded their parents to allow them to marry the men of their choice but Nasir did not agree to the proposal. He claimed that Nasir had killed his two sisters with the consent of his three brothers.

The police have registered a case against Nasir under Section 302 (premeditated murder) of the Pakistan Penal Code, sources said.
