RAWALPINDI: Six police officials, including an official of the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) and seven others were booked by the Saddar Bairooni police on Sunday on charges of kidnapping and murder, although they have not been arrested yet.

The case was registered on the complaint of Ms Shamim, the widow of Waheed Qureshi, who was killed during an encounter with the police.

Ms Shamim filed a petition in the court of additional district and sessions judge Naveed Khalid Dar.

The officials who were booked include the then SHO Civil Lines Inspector Raja Shakeel, who is currently associated with Counter Terrorism Department Rawalpindi, Sub-Inspector Mohammad Hussein, Sub-Inspector Qasir Kiani and three police constables.

Ms Shamim claimed her husband was kidnapped by the police and later shot in a fake encounter in January 23, 2013.

Waheed Qureshi was wanted by the police in connection with the murder of six people in Gulistan

Colony and is said to have died in an ‘encounter’ with the police while his two accomplices managed to escape.

The police claim the encounter took place in the outskirts of Saddar Bairooni and that the raid was carried out after a tip off that Qureshi was hiding in an abandoned house.

According to the police, they had first lobbed tear gas shells into the house in order to get Qureshi and his accomplices to surrender. They had instead opened fire, damaging the police van.

The police had also retaliated with firing during which Qureshi was killed.

The seven other people who were booked for Qureshi’s murder and kidnapping were complainants against him regarding the case of murdering six people.

Waheed Qureshi is said to have killed six members of a family, four of whom were brothers, outside their homes in the Gulistan Colony near Ayub Park on August 10, 2012.

The four brothers were settled in Kuwait and had been visiting their families for Ramazan and Eid.

According to the victims’ families, Waheed Qureshi had invited the brothers to settle a dispute between them which arose while playing football in Ayub Park a few days ago.

However, a quarrel had broken out again between Waheed and the brothers, Pervez Qureshi, Suleman Qureshi and Aurangzeb Qureshi, Pervez’s 20-year-old son Adnan and 22-year old son Nadeem. Waheed and his nephews had opened fire, killing the brothers and their sons.

At the time, a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act, murder and other laws had been registered with the Civil Line police station against 14 persons.

Of the 14 suspects, eight including a woman, were arrested while raids were conducted to arrest Waheed and his wife.
