ISLAMABAD: Police registered on Tuesday an FIR against Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam Senator Hafiz Hamdullah for allegedly abusing and threatening civil society activist Marvi Sirmed on a televised talk show.
Ms Sirmed had filed an application with Kohsar police on Friday, alleging that the senator became belligerent and tried to assault her after the recording of the talk show.
She told Dawn that police had informed her that an FIR had been registered, adding that she had been called to the police station on Wednesday for investigation.
In the FIR, the senator is charged under Sections 354 and 506 of the Pakistan Penal Code, which deal with “assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty”, and “punishment for criminal intimidation”, respectively.
Police reportedly registered the case after making initial inquiries, questioning the other guests who were present at the TV show, and reviewing footage from the channel.
