KARACHI: Police on Thursday arrested a woman over suspicion of her involvement in the mysterious death of a woman whose abandoned son was admitted to Edhi Centre earlier this week.

The Frere police apprehended the woman, identified as Sonia, from her home in the Gizri area.

Investigation officer of the case Irshan Karim told Dawn that the held woman told the police that her husband, Rizwan Ayaz Khan, had not been in contact with her for the last two days and she did not know his whereabouts.

Earlier, the Frere police late on Wednesday night registered an FIR (151/2016) under Sections 302 (murder) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code against Rizwan Ayaz Khan and his wife, Sonia, on a complaint of the dead woman’s brother Umer. The police were treating Rizwan as the prime suspect in the case.

A boy, around five-year old, was admitted to the Edhi Centre earlier this week as an abandoned child found wandering near Do Darya. He was identified as the son of a woman, Haleema, who was found dead in her flat in Delhi Colony on Tuesday night.

The police said that during initial investigation, it transpired that Rizwan, who had acquaintance with the victim, arranged a flat for Ms Haleema, her husband and the child around three months back. In the meantime, the woman’s husband, reportedly suffering from a heart problem, had died.

Saddar SP Dr Samiullah Soomro had told Dawn that it was Rizwan who had left the boy at the Edhi Centre claiming that he had found him wandering about at the Seaview beach near Do Darya around four days back but his whereabouts were not known.

Meanwhile, as news of the abandoned boy was aired by TV channels, relatives approached both the Edhi Foundation and the police to get his custody.
