LAHORE: A General Council meeting of the Punjab Union of Journalists this morning [May 1] welcomed the decision of West Pakistan Governor, Malik Amir Mohammad Khan, to conduct an impartial inquiry into the incidents of Police excesses on working journalists in Karachi, Lahore and Rawalpindi.

A resolution adopted unanimously at the meeting welcomed the assurance of the Governor that possibilities of recurrence of such unfortunate incidents would be eliminated. The meeting was also attended by President of Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists, Mr Asrar Ahmad; President of KUJ, Mr Minhaj Barna; President of RUJ, Mr Ahmad Hasan and other office-bearers of PFUJ. The President of Punjab Union of Journalists, Mr G.M. Naqqash, presided.

Addressing the meeting, Mr Ahmad and Mr Naqqash explained to the members the discussion PFUJ delegation had with the Governor last evening. They appealed to members to maintain their unity and close ranks to safeguard their rights.

The following resolution was adopted today: “This emergency meeting of the General Council welcomes steps decided upon by the Governor, for a speedy and impartial inquiry into the journalists’ grievances of Police maltreatment, punishment to the guilty, and devising of a sound system to eliminate the possibilities of recurrences of such unfortunate incidents in future, and hopes that the finding of the inquiry would be finalised within the shortest possible time. ...”
