WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama ordered has ordered freezing of the assets of all those who are involved in stirring violence in Libya.

A statement issued by his office on Tuesday said the decision would apply to all properties and interests in the United States and in its territories or in the possession or control of US citizens.

The people whose properties and interests are to be seized include all those responsible for or complicit, or to have engaged, directly or indirectly, in “actions or policies that threaten the peace, security, or stability of Libya, including through the supply of arms or related materiel”.

It also covers actions or policies that obstruct, undermine, delay, or impede, or pose a significant risk of obstructing, undermining, delaying, or impeding, the adoption of or political transition to a government of national accord or a successor government.

The order also targets those who are planning, directing, or committing, or to have planned, directed, or committed, attacks against any Libyan state facility or installation (including oil facilities), against any air, land, or sea port in Libya, or against any foreign mission in Libya.

The order also applies to those involved in, or to have been involved in, the targeting of civilians through the commission of acts of violence, abduction.

Those involved in forced displacement, or attacks on schools, hospitals, religious sites, or locations where civilians are seeking refuge will also have their assets confiscated.

Also those who indulge in conduct that would constitute a serious abuse or violation of human rights or a violation of international humanitarian law will also have their assets seized.
