Moin not in PCB plans as new appointments finalised

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has finalised the names for top positions in team management as Mohsin Hasan Khan, Iqbal Qasim and Dean Jones are most likely to be given key roles but has revealed that Moin Khan is currently not in plans of the board.

A PCB official, on condition of anonymity, told APP that the Board will be appointing a foreign coach for the national team in May and most likely the responsibility will be given to former Australian Test batsman Dean Jones.

The PCB had appointed former Test cricketers Wasim Akram and Ramiz Raja to help in finding the best possible coach for the national team.

The Board also shortlisted a foreign and a local candidate.

The new coach’s first assignment will be the series against England starting in July.

The official said that earlier former pacer Aaqib Javed was also interested in the job but when he heard reports that PCB was more inclined toward appointing a foreign coach then he decided to pull out.

“Mohsin Hasan Khan was also keen in becoming the coach but the PCB had offered him the job of the chief selector,” he said.

But Mohsin had rejected the offer to become the chief selector therefore the PCB has decided to appoint him as the team manager.

“The role of chief selector will be given to Iqbal Qasim,” he said.

Responding to a question, he said, currently former wicket-keeper and captain Moin Khan is not in PCB’s plans.

very positive move to appoint Dean Jones as the coach. i think where we were lagging earlier on was not the technical aspect of the game but the strategy and man-management/dressing room environment bit. what little i've read of Pak cricket, Waqar as an individual is a difficult character, that's why he created huge friction with Wasim during his playing days and later was very unsuccessful as a captain despite having a very strong pak team at his disposal (remember 2003 wc). further he's a poor strategist, again his captaincy record proves the same. i feel Dean Jones will not only bring superior playing strategy and improved mindset, he will also bring a much calmer and happier dressing room (something similar to Woolmer's times). Added to this i think anyone would be a better captain than Afridi and Sarfraz is a fantastic choice (i feel he should be captian of the ODI side as well). so things are on the uptick as far as pak cricket goes.

Moin is out of consideration, it makes me feel good and even Iqbal Qasim is out dated thing. Why not try Rashid Latif, Inzimam, Mohammed Yousef and Saqlain as Selection committee members and coaches and asst.coach and train them as your future coaches. Selection committee should be independent and answerable to public.This committee should not take any pressure from higher ups and in case if they cant refuse big criminals of cricket in Pakistan then they should be allowed to go public.

@salman : Such a biased comment against the legendary Fast Bowler. Waqar has much better individual record of bowling and captaincy please check once again while his first tenure as a coach was also a success in fact the recent one was also successful with regards to Test matches. Blaming only him for the failures in ODIs and T20s is totally pathetic as if there is no role of players in the failure. Just go through his report, what he suggested for team in his report seems quite logical endorsed by the other two reports of Ahar Mehmood and Intikhab alam. Wasim Akram also has given weightage to his former partner's report and suggested to implement all the points. As far as Dean Jones is concerned, I can bat over him that he can't produce results and will surely fails like Dave Watmore, Richard Pibus, Bob woolmer because of the same reason that has been described by Waqar in his report. Pakistan Cricket needs a revamp from grass root not any cosmetic surgery will work permanently.

There is a serious leak in PCB somewhere. The names have not been formally announced and yet after reading the article, it appears this is more or less finalized. I wonder what kind of utility Mohsin Khan will have as a Manager when desires to become a coach. His previous role as a selector cum coach though was pretty successful. Keeping Moin Khan out is a good decision. The man doesn't know anything except politics.

Why do we have 2 or 3 guys EVERY TIME!! Iqbal Qasim, Intekhab Alam, Wasim Bari. Reverse again. I mean just get someone like Wasim, Ramiz or even Inzi or Saqlain. Also, this anonymous person is doing a serious damage to this organization. Just zip your mouth until it is officially announced. Seems like this line-up is confirmed after reading this article.

I'm just happy that Moshin Khan has been retained in some capacity - honest and dedicated to the cause, few of the older generation that doesn't put a buck ahead of national interests... Ideally, Aaqib could have also been included in the setup as an assistant coach. Like Moshin, Aaqib is also very hard working and dedicated to the national cause... Iqbal Qasim would only be a sensible choice if more consistent than Haroon Rashid, not backtracking every few weeks in the personnel selected or dropped. Certainly, i'd agree with others that the presence of some recent players would have been useful - M Yusuf is technically very astute in a judging batsman - would have been a good shout..

Happy to see Mohsin Khan & Dean Jones in camp. Very Happy to see Moin Khan out of Camp. Would like to have seen Mudassar Nazir given some major role. For chief selector , I think Rashid Latif would have been great choice .

@salman Nothing would change in terms of Pakistan performance, mark my words,in Bob Woolmer''s era,we were out of the WC at the very initial stage. There may be problems with Waqar''s attitude ,abilities,and strategies,he must not have asked the players not to perform 8n the field.He must not have asked Irfan,Wahab,Sami and many more to bowl waywardly.He must not have asked any batsmen to get out cheaply every time. You cricket will not improve until you pay heed to your domestic as well as grossroot cricket. PCB needs to spend a lot in these segments to uplift cricket. In my school days,I was very good batsman but I gave up playing cricket because of the lack resources,support,financial constraints and discourgement from even school teachers.So did my nephew. First cricketera should be given handsome money and all the facilities of international level.

If what Waqar stated in his report to PCB is even 50% accurate, re Moin Khan and his highly unprofessional, decadent influence upon younger cricketers - then he should have no part in PCB in any form or manner. Instead of setting a strong, principled example for our younger Shaheens, Moin may have led them astray with drinking and gambling ... Seriously Moin Khan?? Sounds like a genuine conspiracy to destroy Pak cricket!

@Bravo Our better test match record is not because of Waqar's strategies, its because of Misbah's onfield great captaincy skills and knowhow and our bowling, where yes, Waqar's input must've been significant. What Dean Jones can or cannot do, we're not sure at the moment, but in my "opinion" he will prove to be a much much better coach than Waqar. What Waqar mentioned in his report was just like a drowning man trying to clutch on to the last piece of wood. It was too little too late. Nobody disagrees with the content of that report, in fact those solutions have been repeatedly mentioned on media, IK's been screaming the whole of that since time immemorial. So can you now see, whose comment was actually biased? :) cheers

@NAVEED, USA Bob Woolmer's era was a great period for Pakistan, barring the 2007 WC fiasco, check stats in my reply to Mr.Bravo :). We had climbed to number 2 in the test ranking amongst other feats. Bro, for a coach, in my opinion, technical aspect takes a back seat and his strategy and man-management skills come to the fore, because at this level there is very little new stuff that a coach can teach to the players. Look at the WI, they were in all sorts of shambles prior to the 2016 WC, board issues, player issues, salary issues. In came Phil simmons and Darren Sammy and things started to fall in to place. Look at England. After the 1992 WC final, they have very little in the limited overs format. In came Andrew Strauss as their Director Cricket and a new strategy was laid out where the modern style cricket was followed, and they look a lot stronger, in fact they were the favorites going in to the final against WI.

@NAVEED USA Look at our records. We have always done well when we've had a good captain combined with a coach who has kept the dressing room environment conducive. Intikhab Alam cricketing skills are very limited but with him (and under two very strong captains, imran and younis) we've won 2 wc's. There is no one better at cricketing knowledge than Miandad in Pakistan, but everytime he's made the coach, the move turns out to be a blunder. You're absolutely right that first you need to strengthen the base (school, FC), but my comment was specifically on the national coaching appointment.

I totally disagree the decisions of PCB. Selection Committee should comprise of Young or Recently Retired cricketers. such as Razzak, Gul, Akhter, Yousif,& Nazir. Team coach should be Pakistani and if you want some (International) Big name in the dressing then bring him as Mentor, not as coach. Best Mentor for team is VIV Richards or SANGAKARA. Coach should be the one who has very good co-ordination with Captain and team. Coach for T20 Should be Younis khan (Worldcup winner) and for Test and ODI Misbha ulhaq. he is retiring this year so he would be a perfect choice for coaching.
