India beat Bangladesh by one run in nail biter

BENGALURU: Host India snatched victory from the jaws of defeat to keep alive their hopes of reaching the World Twenty20 semi-finals with a dramatic one-run win over Bangladesh on Wednesday.
Bangladesh, chasing 147 for victory in the Group Two match, needed 11 runs off the last over bowled by seamer Hardik Pandya and made the perfect start as Mushfiqur Rahim (11) smashed two early fours.
However, they then lost three wickets off the final three deliveries as a jubilant India team scraped over the line to climb to second in the table while their opponents remained bottom following a third defeat.
“In a situation like this it's literally chaos,” said home captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
“What you're trying to do is trying to manage chaos. You have to assess everything but it has to happen in a short span of time.”
India, under pressure after losing to New Zealand in their opening match, were put in to bat at the start of the day and lost both openers in quick succession.
Virat Kohli (24) and Suresh Raina (30) steadied the ship by adding 50 for the third wicket but a disciplined performance by Bangladesh's bowlers held India in check as they posted a modest total of 146 for seven.
The home spinners then took control with Bangladesh unable to get to grips with Raina, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja.
Ashwin struck with his second ball, removing Mohammad Mithun for one.
Fellow opener Tamim Iqbal (35), back in the side after food poisoning, and Sabbir Rahman (26) shared a stand of 44 before both were stumped by Dhoni.
Ashwin then picked up the important wicket of Shakib Al Hasan (22) while Jadeja bowled Mashrafe Mortaza for six.
Mahmudullah hit back with a quickfire 18 and Soumya Sarkar struck a run-a-ball 21 to haul Bangladesh within sight of victory.
However, a thrilling final over saw Mushfiqur caught at deep mid-wicket by Shikhar Dhawan.
Mahmudullah was also snapped up by Jadeja in the deep off the next ball and, needing one run to take the game into a super over, Bangladesh number 11 Mustafizur Rahman was run out by keeper Dhoni after completely missing a wide delivery.
“We were on top till the last three balls, we could have taken singles,” said skipper Mashrafe Mortaza.
“We needed only two runs off three balls. It is disappointing.”

Amazing victory by Indians...they deserved it...what a game spirit despite a turbulent bowling and miss catches loved the way theu veered the game towards their side.
I hope Pakistani team will learn some skills showed in this match by Indians..But I wont be surprised if they loose to Australia on 25th cause perhaps they didnt watch this India bang match being busy shopping or taking selfies.

Right from the start of the match I rued the fact that Dhoni missed a trick by not playing Bhajji. The way Aswin turned in his last over just cemented that thought. India actually missed an extra spinner today. Of course Pandya should have been rested and that would have been the right decision. India won today due to inexperience of BD lower middle and lower order. Actually, Lara commented on a talk show after the India-Pak game that India is gifting away abt 20 odd runs to the opposition every match by not playing Bhajji as an extra spinner on the kind of tracks where their grp matches are being played. Pandya is a liability on these wickets :( imagine Ashwin, Jadeja and Bhajji bowling 12 overs and 8 overs from Bumrah and Nehra on these tracks. Suddenly, Indian bowling might seem invincible..

Dhoni knows how to win in pressure situations. No wonder he has won so many cups and finals as they are usually pressure matches. India got the 2 points they wanted. Bangladesh bowled brilliantly. Young chap mustafizur is amazibg, earlier Australians were not able to play him. They have skill but their aggression is not controlled. After hitting 2 fours to pandya in the last over the batsman celebrated wildly said few "those" words thinking he almost won. Then he wanted to hit six. Even the next batsman also did the same.

something strange the way bangla deshi team lost the match. Either rank incomptence of leadership or money spoke louder. If india was eliminated ,lot of box office loss. The way Ahmad shezad and umar akmal and to some extent Shoaib played for Pakistan deserves some soul searching . These guys may have to sidelined for good , for not even trying to play like 20/20 batsman. are there other motives? something to ponder

Being an Indian fan, I would say that we didn't deserve to win today. The pitch was bad & our batsmen couldn't score. Even in-form Kohli struggled. Bangladesh bowlers bowled exceptionally & field placements were unorthodox but very effective. At one point, it looked we would score 160 but scored only 146. We started badly, misfields, dropped catches, bowlers going for runs, some wickets, a brilliant stumping by Dhoni, again dropped catches, boundaries & sixes. Finally 52 of 48 required with 6 wickets in hand. Then Ashwin bowls a beauty over with a wicket & it became 51 of 42 balls. Next 3 overs go for 17. Now 34 of 24 required. Bumrah gives 7, Nehra gives 10 & its 17 of 12. Bumrah bowls five yorkers & gives only 6 runs in 19th over. 11 of 6 required. Pandya comes in & is hit for 2 boundaries on 2nd & 3rd ball. 2 of 3 required. Then Bangladesh batsmen go for glory. Suddenly two wickets fall. 2 of 1 required. Dhoni keeps with a glove off, runs 15 yards & get a run out. India wins.

It was a very close match. But we stayed in the game only because of Dhoni's captaincy I feel. We were sloppy in the field, dropped 3 catches, did misfields, didn't bat well enough. But Dhoni did a brilliant stumping of Shabbir where he waited a second before taking bails off. Also, Dhoni did excellent field placements in last 5 overs. Bumrah bowled good last 2 overs of his 4 over spells. But it was actually Bangladesh batsmen who decided to go for glory instead of keeping it simple when only 2 runs were required from 3 balls. They threw 2 wickets away in 2 balls. And suddenly the scoreboard read 2 required of 1 ball. Dhoni specifically asked Pandya not to bowl a yorker & instead bowl a back-of-a-length ball. Pandya executed it beautifully but again it was Dhoni who decided to stand 2 step forwards, stood with one glove off, collected the ball & sprinted 15 yards in a flash without throwing the ball & caused the run out while reaching the stumps before Mustafizur. Dhoni is my hero.

The lesson is: if you need fewer runs (2 in this case) than the outstanding balls (3 in this case) in last over, do not try to finish off with a bang. Just keep your cool and grab singles. Your opposition is in worse psychological state.

The difference between the two teams;winner and loser by the narrowest possible margin, I.e. By one run was MS Dhoni. He after facing the last ball of Indian innings, ran for second run almost dragging Ashwin out from his crease at the strikers end, and that tricky cum risky run made the difference Then again when Bangladesh faced the last ball of their innings the ball missed the bat and went sailing into the gloves of Dhoni. The batsmen ran for one bye, but Dhoni was quick enough to run to his facing stumps to break them and deny the Single run to the rival team and with that they lost

It’s a shame Bangladesh lost. But I am really pleased to see their spirit. After all the dramas they have gone through in the last few days, they really have earned my respect for great showing. They play their cricket like the way Argentines (with passion and emotion) play their football as opposed to the Germans (machine like). I know sometimes it may come out as though they are over doing it, but trust me it comes from the passion they have for the game and the love for their country. Not everyone express their emotion same way. It’s really good to see peace in here among the fans from all sides. Great advertisement of the game of cricket!!

Bangladesh dominated India for 39.3 overs. The problem for them was they tried to copy Dhoni's Six to finish the match in style & got out. Still Bangladesh won our heart. Much better than Pakistan.

The two teams in group b which have played exciting cricket are new Zealand and Bangladesh. They deserved to be in semis. Sadly only NZ has made it. India has not played well in tournament. No other team has played so badly. They are the only test playing nation in this wc to loose so badly their first match. Remaining two matches they won one by kohli and second by luck.

It was truly a nail biter there are few points to consider....
1. I dian fielding was poor till sakib was there.
2.never celeberate victory untill the last run has not been scored so did by mushfique.
3. It was dhoni vs mustafizur in the last ball because it was confirm that mustafizur will definitely run for everything and clearly dhoni defeated him easily.

For any Bangladeshi fans reading this commiserations. Your team deserved to win
with the way they bowled and fielded. Over the years all Bangla batsmen seem to
want to hit only 4s and 6s (Ashraful, the Bangla Tendulkar comes to mind). One
may cite many reasons including a certain bias overall in favour of India, England
and Australia but this was a match that Bangladesh had in its pocket and lost.
But the way your team is playing they will win lots of matches from now on
if they just find one batsman who will stay till the end rotating the strike,
taking 1s and 2s. Tamim Iqbal could have done it and made history but it was not
to be.

Even when India was on the edge of loosing, my heart was saying India cannot loose at Chinaswamy Bangalore.

How important was the extra run stolen by Dhoni in the last ball of India's innings. Ashwin was hesitant to run the second. Equally, how important was the decision to remove one glove and run on to the stump with the ball in hand to get the batsman out. Only Dhoni the skipper can do such things which make a difference between victory and defeat !
Man of the match award should have gone to Bumrah who converted the match into a thriller by dropping easy catch, misfielding and allowing Bangladesh batsman to hit 4 boundaries in a row in his one over !

Very exciting match till the end. Very impressed with Bangladesh the way they played , they didn't keep cool only in the last over other wise They could have also win the match. But Dhoni's cool head was the trick for India.

All is well that ends well... But it was more a case of BNG snatching defeat from the jaws of Victory. Fair to say that BNG were on top for 39.3 of the 40 overs. Perhaps over confidence got the better of them. Neverthless, India did keep their calm & did not panic thru.

It was maturity of Dhoni which won the match for India. Hats off to captain cool. His stumping was something only he could do. During the last over after 8 runs were scored, he kept his cool. Last ball run out was brilliant. He did not throw the ball, which most wicket keepers would have done. Brilliant.

Congrats to Afghanistan and Bangladesh for improving the standard of their cricket as Afghanistan too gave the tough fight to England and lost by mere 15 runs and same with Bangladesh by 1 Runs to India and their tough fight to Australia as well and congrats to India as well who also gave the good bowling fight to Bangladesh to win the match and gave the public a thriller entertainment.

Dhoni's captaincy is going down hill. Making Pandya bowl last over was a huge mistake. He is an average bowler... Fortunately for the Indians, BD team did not capitalize on Dhoni's mistake....on top of that, BD team threw away wickets on juicy full tosses....come on.....even a school or club level cricketer could have converted those to at least two runs if not a boundary..it was pure luck that India won yesterday's match..BD team gifted the game to India...Dhoni also did blunders in Pak vs Ind match... not making Ashwin bowl his fourth over and not using Yuvraj at all on a pitch, which was turning a mile....those 6 overs that the two pace bowlers bowled cost India 57 runs...India could have easily folded Pakistan under 100....but he had to make the match a bit exciting by letting Pakistan put up a decent score on the board.....

Bangladesh also would have gone early and the match would not have come to last 3 balls had India not dropped 3 crucial catches due to poor fielding.Lesson for India you dropped 3 catches then do more effort till end to won the match and they did won.So next time dont drop catches and do better fielding.

We were lucky. Silly batting by BD in the last over and smart stuff by Dhoni (stumping, bowling changes, last ball run-out) saved the Indian team. Having said that had Bumrah caught Tamim sitter, then India may have won comfortably. But that's Cricket isn't it?

There was only one difference between India and Bangladesh - India had MS Dhoni, Bangladesh did not. One two occasions we saw his exception craft at work - the wily stumping, and the last ball run out.
India weren't at their best yesterday - the top order batsmen continue to display ineptitude if a wicket isn't perfectly true. And the fielding was uncharacteristically sloppy, with three dropped catches. The fast bowlers weren't very disciplined in early spells, with attempted yorkers tuning into juicy full tosses.
Bangladesh was the better side overall - but MS Dhoni made the difference.

@Vectra Bangladesh has been playing International cricket for 20 years now, they are a test playing nation not an associate country.... They have beaten teams like India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Australia, South Africa, England, New Zealand in the past... Though I am a bit disappointed with their test match performance... They are a brilliant team in the shorter format.... Had luck gone their way they would have defeated both India & Australia hands down.... Bangladesh played very well, beyond expectation. They outplayed India in all fields - bowling (restricting India to mere 146), fielding (India missed many catches) and batting. But failed in one field, and that proved very very crucial, that is captainship. Bangladesh skipper could not beat Indian skipper in tactics. The last over being given to Hardik Pandya was an example of shrewed captaincy. Batsmen were playing Bumrah and Nehra in the previous overs, suddenly they had to face a bowler who had conceded 20 runs in two overs. They took Pandya a bit lightly and lofted him to be caught. Hats off to MS Dhoni.

People who are calling the win as plain luck also need to consider Dhoni's field placing in the last three balls to prevent singles, understanding that it is an 8 down batsmen hence advising the bowler for bowling short ball so that he doesn't score easily, anticipating on the last ball that batsmen will run on anything, hence taking off right hand glove and standing near the stumps, not throwing the ball and running all the way to hit the wickets. It takes thinking and planning followed by execution to win. Giving up would have been easy. But if you still keep doing your Karma the right way, results will follow - fortune also favors the brave !

@farhan I agree with your views about his captaincy except for yesterday's game. Did you remember last T20 of AUS tour to UAE? George Bailey bowled out his main bowlers in search of wickets only to give Maxwell the last over with 2 runs to win for Pakistan. Had Dhoni bowled any of Pandya or Raina in the 19th over, game would have been over or at max Bumrah would have been left with 3-4 runs to defend in the final over.

somesay it's all credit to dhoni. Why? Logically there shud have been another spinner. Atleast bowl yuvraj? Why dhoni didn't do such a basic common sense? This team is mostly flat track bullies. See how they played against good spinners in New Zealand team? Since India lost badly to England when swan and panesar were bowling and that too in India. Subsequent matches over the years have strengthened my view that Indians can't play good spinners. But We Indians are like the English football teams hyped up. Only difference is that epl teams have strong oppositions. But India has just 8 teams playing and we beat Bangladesh and that too last ball by 1 run under the great captain Dhoni.hehehe. dhoni can be compared with the so called best captain of the time ponting and the so called best coach Buchanan...If you understand what I mean. This is hilarious.... India won bcos of dhoni hehehe. I wud say we almost lost bcoz of dhonis team selection. By the way India didn't win. Bangladesh lost.

After Indian team, I was madly supporting Pakistan team and many Pak cricketers but after Afridi made a comment that all those supported Pak in Eden Garden against New Zealand were Kashmiris, I was disheartened. To be honest, I am Pakistan team lover but I am not Kashmiris. This political comment made not only me to stop going to stadium and support Pakistan but many Indians from different part of India will go and support Pakistan afterwards. Dear fans from Pak. we should love the cricket regardless of border but should denounce any political colours in cricket.

It was a thrilling game with nail biting finish. I am very happy that India won. Feel bad for BD for being so close but yet far. But it does not hide the fact that India's performance is below par with batters failing consistently, and good captain like Dhoni has to muster all his resources to pull off like this one. Our bowlers performed the best. Full respect to BD for playing to their potential when 2 main bowlers sitting out. Hopefully, batters play better next time against Australia and give some relief to MSD. I am sure BD will get over this and be formidable next time.

It is easy to criticise them sitting at a coffee table, but what the poor players go through with all the noise around and huge stress building up, I think it is unfair to hammer them. Sympathies with BD team.

Didn't you see that brilliant stumping ? His eyes were glued to bashirs legs .. He kinda predicted that he would lost his balance .. He waited and removed his bails.. All this at inch perfection within 2-3 seconds

And what about last over .. Wasnt his fielding setting that won us the game ? With just 2 runs to go he could have easily placed all fielders closer as anyone would think batsmen will go for singles as safe bet
But man he's truely tactical genius .. He knew what he wanted .. And execution was brilliant
Talking about him not giving over to Yuvraj .. I don't see that help us any either .. Set batsmen could have hit him for sixes ..
