China urges Pakistani leaders to resolve issues over CPEC project

ISLAMABAD: China on Saturday took notice of the recent political divide among local leaders over China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and urged the political parties to address their difference in order to create favourable conditions for the completion of CPEC project.

The People’s Republic hoped that the relevant political parties in Pakistan could strengthen communication and coordination on CPEC to create favorable conditions for the development projects.

A spokesman for the Chinese embassy in Islamabad expressed the hope that “relevant parties should strengthen their communication and coordination on the matter”.

"We are ready to work with Pakistanis, to actively promote construction of CPEC projects, and bring tangible benefits to the people of the two countries,” the spokesman added.

The spokesman further said that the multi-million dollar CPEC project is the consensus reached between China and Pakistan, and has won popular support from the people of the two countries.

“CPEC benefits Pakistan as a whole and will bring development and benefits to the people of the country,” he maintained.

Earlier in the day, Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal said the government has addressed the reservations of all parliamentary parties of Balochistan regarding CPEC’s western route.

Ahsan Iqbal said Balochistan government has also assured full support in completion of the project, Radio Pakistan reported.

The incumbent government is determined to protect the national project as it is a game changer for the country and region, he added.

Please dont pass everything via Lhr, Pakistan is not Lahore only. Prev major project was motorway. Same things was happened M2 and M1 was inaugurated in 2004 by President Pervez Musharrafand operational since 30 October 2007. No royalty is given to KPK on dams rights. Dont make country hijack untill some1 from outside tell u to do so.

@Manmohan This is the only kind of politicians available in the world. Nations need to work with what is available. Democracy or not if a project of this magnitude requires a certain level of importance then it should be provided with it. Accepted that democratic nations have a bigger hurdle than non democratic ones. My experience of 16 years in large projects have convinced me that even if 30-40% of the desired objective is achieved then it is a great achievement. Also CPEC isn't a project it is actually playing contours for an industrialised Pakistan. However since its RoI will need to be examined and project costs could fly if not controlled on Costa and time.

For the sake of the better future of Pak the CPEC must be completed as the Chinese embassy spokesperson said “CPEC benefits Pakistan as a whole and will bring development and benefits to the people of the country”. People - this is a Chinese project not a Pakistani project. Pak govt has no choice but to follow the course of what the Chinese want but once completed all will benefit. Hopefully, the Chinese can put some sense to the corrupt politicians and people of Pakistan.

Lions share attitude is not going to serve Pakistan at all.Abolishing rights of smaller provinces and favoring some particular organ is not in our favour.Once we accept the equal share of all stake holders, Gilgit-Baltistan to KPK and Baluchistan/Sindh then we are rightful to dream of some positive results out of the CPEC..

CPEC seems like a great opportunity. However, the public disclosure of the agreement/s with China are warranted. The government has no right to approve agreements with foreign governments without public disclosure and without debate and ratification of the Parliament

@msadiq Wake up MR SADIQ. i think u might be living in another country. its going to be about 70 years for our independence. Check all records from 1953 when big and small Dams started to come in existence. How many are in what province and how much royalty they got. A fact is a Fact. KPK and Baluchistan were and are always getting smaller piece of the Pie and in some cases not at all. The most famous explanation center use to give was WELL PUNJAB has more population. So if they do does it makes other provinces fault. LOL .... and besides common sense dictates when u build a Dam or Get Gas from other provinces you have to pay them their royalty ...thats the law or Rule everywhere on the face of the earth ...NOT IN PK and Specially not for PUNJAB .... So if 18 million Pakistani want to see this country prosperous this whole punjab for punjabi concept has to be crushed and only the Ummah and pakistani identities has to be center of our existence.

@asad CPEC is a Chinese Project. Ask them about the approved design. It is like a Private project, not some public funding that has to be distributed among provinces. Also after Karachi the second biggest city of Pakistan is Lahore. If Karachi has the access to sea port then why Lahore should not have it?. If Karachi has the right to be a financial capital, then so does Lahore has the right to financial institutions and infrastructure. Also you forgot that Motorway project was not a Project of Musharraf. It was PMLN led project.

China doesn't need roads through Pakistan - China needs an oil pipeline from Gwadar to China. But anyone notice that CPEC doesn't include that. As such the benefit to China from CPEC is the money from the construction projects. Pakistan borrows money from China and is forced to hire Chinese Construction firms under no bid arrangements - where's the value added in that?

Isn't these roads supposed be work of experts and technical staff to map , most favorable , shortest possible route and safe passage: not pass to close frontiers: flood zone, earthquake landscape, now this has become fiefdom politics: perhaps Chinese engineers and expert steps in and decide which should be most feasible route: later on all provinces, districts, tehsils, deh, cities, villages etc can build roads to join main motorway/ highway.

We got Three Sharifs from Punjab. CM,PM,COAS. (Like Three Musketeers). They work hard to put the country back in order. Cm Punjab Shahbaz is credible personality. He by him self go over seas & international communities to bring investment and business to Punjab and in the whole to Pakistan. Why the others four provinces CM cannot do the same? I am from KP. Another Kalabagh Dam in the making -- thanks to PTI. The sad part is that poor IK has no idea how much damage he is doing the country to feed his own ego. The CPEC disparities should be resolved in one-on-one meetings of party leaders as opposed to using public political posturing laced with a sectarian tinge and Punjab bashing. Thanks to the brilliant move on CPEC by Khattak Sahab PTI has now become a party representing 1/2 a province. Perhaps it is for the best after all; some things never change.

@asad This is so absurd. I have never heard an American say, "please do not pass everything through NY or LA." or a Brit say "please do not pass everything through London." Why should a key economic project of Pakistan by-pass key economic and industrial hubs like Lahore and Karachi in favour of an undeveloped desert rife with security issues? It is just bad business to do so. Would you not drive an extra 10% distance if given the option to bypass an unsafe area? The provincial governments should first create a business-friendly environment in their provinces before they get on their high moral horses to threaten the federation with illegal actions to stop country's progress.

We're at risk of losing chinese support because political parties who were against this project are now causing trouble because they want a bigger and bigger share. If China withdraws support, it's because of the opposition parties. The chinese decide which projects to invest in, and if they choose punjab, then it's probably because Punjab is investor friendly and not because of some conspiracy.

can baloch and pakhtoon nationals peace explain to me when your leaders are seen dotting around the pm everyday .they are seen in apc's .they are seen in an assortment of committees related to the cpec heck! they are even present at inaugurations of cpec projects dispensing rosy speeches .they complain its just a highway when questioned about it from NHA chairman and this is on record he says its a dual carriageway and if you don't know what that means then basically its motorway quality minus the one extra lane because of low traffic . there are dams being built in kpk .your leaders talk about sez's but recommendation for there established is down to the provincial governments themselves .look I'm not any supporter of the pmln but these double standards are beyond me when clearly the facts on ground present a different reality from the narrative these nationalists dispense. petty politics !

@asad Agree with you , I have a question for NHA & Islamabad , why they have not made a motorway earlier to connect Karachi to rest of the country , where the logististic /Heavy transport movement in & out from Karachi and it is the highest load transportation movement in Pakistan . Look at the pathetic condition of Super Hi- way & NHi-way in Sindh and both comes under federal government's control. All being spent only in one province !

CPEC is being disputed bit by bit.....as everything must pass via Lahore.....I don't blame PML (N) for it......as one province overshadows in population all the other three and AJK, this is the result.......Hence, the solution lies in making the divisions into provinces so that population and democratic power is diffused......

@Cyrus Since when? Most of the tax revenue is collected in Karachi not Lahore. Even under these adverse circumstances is there any denying that Karachi is the economic heart of the country. We should be giving KP, Baluchistan and upper Sindh a chance to develop. Plus Lahore is not suited strategically, which the Chinese also realize.

@JK The federal government is responsible for any controversy about CPEC, May 28 APC on CPEC was a remarkable show of unity but Nawaz Sharif and his ministers think Pakistan is only Punjab, especially Lahore. It's the central government making this project controversial and not the provincial. All the smaller provinces want their due share in development and progress, so why the guardians of federation backtracking from theur words?

If anybody's mind is stuck in status quo, like to become happy with ostentatious work such as (low standard) bridges, roads, buses, etc cannot become satisfied with civic amenities, for example, improving health, education, police, environment, etc. If you ever visit KPK, just compare the mentioned sectors with those of any other province. Beside look at the control over the menace of corruption. Have you seen any mega scandal in KPK in this govt. PTI is building institutions, not producing or increasing elites.

@amir in May last year in APC all agreed on Western route why diversion then. The central govt cheated some leaders while inaugurating N50, which was not part of CPEC but a highway funded by ADB earlier than CPEC.

Chinese finances but advantage being manipulated to benefit India by routing the main highway as near to Wagha as possible for convenience of Indian trade activities. Chinese are not babies the project is likely to suffer. Hats off to the shortsighted politicians.

Apart from all the reservations and all counter arguments of disparities among sectors and provinces-which has been a long narrative of rendition of pakistani govt-CPEC is the peoject of whole nation. Neither it is the project of one city, province or region nor a particular class of society is going to benefited from it. Ultimately, it will change the fate and economic trajectory of whole nation. So the political and social sections do not need to describe the whole work in reprimended way however not beyond their due space amd limits. Political and security establishment should devise ways and means to effectively and smoothly execute the phase of construction by not letting hawks, anti-development and anti-state elements to spoil the long awaited and due perks of its geostrategic and geopolitical location.

@Iqbal Khan you're quite right KPk and Baluchistan is not in the grand plan of development and progression in Pakistan think-tank.... kpk and Baluchistan are only serving as a buffer zone for the rest of the country...
