DUBAI: Saudi Arabia on Tuesday announced the formation of a 34-state Islamic military coalition to combat terrorism, according to a joint statement published on state news agency SPA.

“The countries here mentioned have decided on the formation of a military alliance led by Saudi Arabia to fight terrorism, with a joint operations center based in Riyadh to coordinate and support military operations,” the statement said.

A long list of Arab countries such as Egypt, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, together with Islamic countries Turkey, Malaysia, Pakistan and Gulf Arab and African states were mentioned.

The announcement cited “a duty to protect the Islamic nation from the evils of all terrorist groups and organisations whatever their sect and name which wreak death and corruption on earth and aim to terrorise the innocent.”

Iran, Saudi Arabia's archrival for influence in the Arab world, was absent from the states named as participants, as proxy conflicts between the two regional powers rage from Syria to Yemen.

The United States has been increasingly outspoken about its view that Gulf Arab states should do more to aid the military campaign against the militant Islamic State (IS) militant group based in Iraq and Syria.

Confronting 'any terrorist organisation'

In a rare press conference, 30-year-old deputy crown prince and Defence Minister Mohammed bin Salman told reporters on Tuesday that the campaign would “coordinate” efforts to fight terrorism in Iraq, Syria, Libya, Egypt and Afghanistan, but offered few concrete indications of how military efforts might proceed.

“There will be international coordination with major powers and international organisations ... in terms of operations in Syria and Iraq. We can't undertake these operations without coordinating with legitimacy in this place and the international community,” bin Salman said without elaborating.

Asked if the new alliance would focus just on IS, bin Salman said it would confront not only that group but “any terrorist organisation that appears in front of us.”

Saudi Arabia and its Gulf Arab neighbours have been locked in nine months of warfare with Iran-allied rebels in neighbouring Yemen, launching hundreds of air strikes there.

Especially after a rash of attacks on Western targets claimed by IS in recent months, the US has increasingly said it thinks that firepower would better be used against IS.

As a ceasefire is set to take hold in Yemen on Tuesday alongside United Nations-backed peace talks, Riyadh's announcement may signal a desire to shift its attention back toward the conflicts north of its borders.

IS has pledged to overthrow the monarchies of the Gulf and have mounted a series of attacks on Shia Muslim mosques and security forces in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.

They should form all 56 nations and must liberate palestine.

mudassar Dec 15, 2015 06:20am

Another OIC?

Also, look who is proposing :)

Realiste Dec 15, 2015 06:29am

Great, now go get rid of ISIS instead of relying on the West for it.

Waqas Dec 15, 2015 06:33am

Good initiative. We need more cooperation between the Muslim countries. Also no tears about Iran not being included, we need to keep an eye on them, they pretend to be all brothers but we will be stabbed as soon as it's beneficial to them. Look at how much blood has been shed in Syria. Would have been better had Iran not stepped in. The revolution would have removed a dictatorship.

Nadeem M Dec 15, 2015 06:33am

The alliance should be led by nuclear power Pakistan.

Muzaffar Ali Dec 15, 2015 06:55am

Usual talk without substance in short a Whitewash!

Turkey Qatar Saudi and the Gulfies supporting ISIS....did they just have a change of heart or are they dumping ISIS because their end is near at the hands of Russia Syria and Iran, plus Hizbullah.

ahmed Dec 15, 2015 06:55am

Stupid idea. 0+0+0 will always remain zero. Pakistan should stay away from this mess as its equivalent of fighting their battle.

Muzaffar Ali Dec 15, 2015 06:56am

Pakistan should not join this force.

Muzaffar Ali Dec 15, 2015 07:09am

Besides Russia will not accept anyone interrupting their effort....

@mudassar you are right. I suspect the first target will be to clear Yemen.

The Muslim world needs unity at this critical juncture of history.

Close-up the wounds within the Muslim world - include all other Muslim countries including Iran and Iraq...

Ali Dec 15, 2015 07:52am

Pakistan shouldn't let KSA to use him against anyone, because we know what they are going to do in future, so thinkers and planners should assess in depth of future politics and its fallout.

Ga Dec 15, 2015 08:06am

Pakistan is larger in population than all of these countries combined. Being a nuclear power with the 5th largest army and with significant technical know-how, Pakistan should lead.

Ali Dec 15, 2015 08:15am

I don't think it will bear any fruits the purpose of it and it's intension is shallow and is self centered not to include Iran is sad as they were invaded by sadam supported by the gulf Arabs As far as Pakistan being a member is a good thing as they are a No 1 leader in this field with appreciation World over

If they were indeed Muslim and Islamic they would be fighting to free Palestine and Kashmir...not fighting for the West in its War on Islam.

Pakistan should not be biased. Play Smart with western. politics is mandatory. .. Now this alliance should led by solely Pakistan.

The West created ISIS. The West also created al-Qaeda, at the time they were Mujahideen fighting the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.

Good move by Saudi Arabia to fight terrorism. Pakistan needs to support this move even more.

Jalbani Baloch Dec 15, 2015 09:59am

In my opinion, Pakistan should not have been part of this alliance as extremism and militancy is an internal threat and not external threat. Although, Pakistan is worst affected by this internal threats, but it has capacity to deal with them at its own level and I am sure it does not require any military support from any state to come and join in our fight against terrorists. However, these terrorists threat may be challenging for GCC States, which are run my monarchies and since they are not militarily so strong to withstand such threats, they seek to engage other nations in their war against their own terrorist outfits. So, Pakistan is a nuclear state and it must act responsibly.

Bitter Truth Dec 15, 2015 10:01am

A nice step. Needs to be encouraged!

UKumar Dec 15, 2015 10:01am

I hope this group can provide boots on ground to fight ISIS.

Kamran Dec 15, 2015 10:07am

Yet another joke. Terrorism is about mindset not bodies. Need to change the mindset with proper narrative. Yes, military is necessary for the short run but in the end you need narrative to counter theirs. Listen to what Mr Javed Ahmad Ghamidi has to say.

Dubya Dec 15, 2015 10:15am

Great chance to lead OIC for Pakistan ... After all Pakistan is the MAJOR nuclear power .

Abbasi Dec 15, 2015 10:17am

Syed Arbab Ahmed Dec 15, 2015 10:18am

wellcome, this alliance is the requirement of piece loving muslim nation, badly suffering with menace of terrorism. head of this alliance ksa should be detrrmined like coas of pakistan to crush every hurdle in the noble goal of members.

Faisal Dec 15, 2015 11:21am

Saudis should first leave their lavish life style and use their resources to some useful things. Muslims should united including Iran, this divide between Muslims would trigger a great war between them and that what's their enemies want. Let them kill each other and the survivors would be killed by West and America.

Pathetic Idea.

BK Dec 15, 2015 01:43pm

How a unilateral decision can be announced without elaborated discussion ?The Arab military is failure due to lack of experience and their lavish living culture. They want somebody to take care of them, and in the long run it may not very fruitful decision.

Anas Dec 15, 2015 01:44pm

An alliance that will be lead by Pakistani, Egyptian, Turkish and other non-Arab forces and where the Arabs will pay the non-Arabs to fight for them. Not much of an alliance is it.

Not to mention, it was the arab countries that have led to growth of these extremist factions, yeah let's choose to ignore that

khan Dec 15, 2015 02:04pm

look who is saying!

Atam Vetta Dec 15, 2015 02:08pm

Excellent. The participation of Turkey is most welcome. The absence of Iran should not be given undue prominence. The simple truth is that IS regards Iran & Shias as its Number 1 enemy. The KSA is at number 2. There is already an agreement between Iran and the KSA negotiated by Russia. So the vast majority of the Muslim world is on board. God bless this UNITY of Sunni & Shia Muslims against terrorism in the name of Islam.

Factual Dec 15, 2015 02:11pm

Muslim states should deal with problem themselves and this alliance is a good thing. If we don't take charge of the situation, western countries will continue to invade our lands for one reason or the other. These invasions are the root cause of terrorism and hence cycle will continue. It is time Muslims stand up to the challenge and take control of their territories. Look at the broader picture and don't give them reason for another invasion.

Unity Dec 15, 2015 02:11pm

if saudi wants entire Muslim Ummah to unite, why leave Iran?

Ahmed Dec 15, 2015 02:12pm

A legal cover for dragging Pakistan into Yemen. They can't fight and want us to do their dirty work. Calling it Islamic without all Islamic countries represented is a facade, meant to shore up saudi monarchy

Baaligh Dec 15, 2015 02:15pm

@Abdul Manan : If wishes were horses...beggars would ride. Try to understand the scenario - the background. Any hope that Muslim countries as listed in the alliance would fight to liberate Palestine ?

Taimur Dec 15, 2015 02:35pm

Ali Raza Noor Dec 15, 2015 02:41pm

@Naxalite They created it and our muslim brothers like qatar, turkey and Saudia supported them financially and other ways

Muhammad Dec 15, 2015 02:43pm

I wonder if every one of this so called alliance is after IS and then Western forces are separately against them and further more Russia and Iran are fighting with them from the front then how come IS is still surviving even expanding it's roots internationally. There is something big fishy may be some forces are pretending to be against them but supporting them through other channels. Isn't it.

Skeptic Dec 15, 2015 02:54pm

It took 60 years for an 'Islamic Militatry Alliance' to be formed - just to fight IS?

Where were these countries when Israel was brutalizing the Palestinians?

A Dec 15, 2015 03:08pm

Right Step in the wrong direction

Hameed Dec 15, 2015 03:11pm

Regrettably, this is not an "alliance", this is a "divide". An attempt to divide Muslim world into Shia and Sunni bases. Rather then joining any such group, Pakistan should work with other Muslim countries to create unity among Muslim countries.

Mustafa Dec 15, 2015 03:19pm

KSA leading the alliance against terrorism?

Shabbir Kazmi Dec 15, 2015 03:28pm

The monarchs are trying to create an impression that they are against ISIS but the fact is that over the years they have been godfathering the militants. In fact ISIS was supported to rob oil from Iraq and Libya and ushering destruction in Syria. When will the citizens open their eyes and ears and start thinking that the money spent on sponsoring terrorism must be spent on their welfare.

Ahmed Haneef Dec 15, 2015 03:34pm

Pakistan first ask this alliance to come Pakistan and clean this mess of terrorism by helping Pakistani Army. should not do anything which destroy any relationship with Chinese and Russian investments in Pakistan, as this alliance made on the request of USA, initially will be used against Iran and then Russia and China.

Nazir Ahmed Dec 15, 2015 03:35pm

Not a good alliance without Iran.

Mahmood Dec 15, 2015 03:37pm

I strongly oppose any Muslim alliance formed to attack another Muslim nation, or to interfere in its internal affairs. Instead, we need unity to find peace and reconciliation among the Ummah and to confront external threats.

Ahmed Haneef Dec 15, 2015 03:51pm

Abu Mohammed Dec 15, 2015 03:56pm

Pakistan should stay away from Turkey and Sauids they are totally exposed in funding and supporting terrorist in Syria and Iraq even western media started criticising them.

Taimoor Khan Dec 15, 2015 03:59pm

Really? when did this happened? Who in Pakistan agreed to such arrangement? Pakistan being the sole nuclear power of Muslim world and the most powerful Islamic military state would now work under Saudi Arabia from Riyadh? Our leaders are clueless and deliberately degrade the status of Pakistan given half a chance.

Yousaf Dec 15, 2015 04:03pm

why only 34 countries? Is it a divide between Shia and Sunni ? Saudi Arab government must first bring its own house in order. All these extremist were initially funded by saudi arabia.

Azhar jamil Dec 15, 2015 04:16pm

Powers behind the creation of ISIS are focusing now on its dismantling.

Taha Dec 15, 2015 04:16pm

US new technique is being followed gather few countries make an Alliance and attack any country without approval of UN and world community. In previous US led coalition has 65 countries but active countries are on 3 to 4.

Ali Dec 15, 2015 08:01pm

Pakistan is the only Muslim nuclear-weapon state, therefore has enormous responsibility to promote "peace and stability" in the world. It's great news that 34 Muslim states decided to form a military alliance to fight terrorism. As our government was bogged own in petty politics it failed to take the "leadership" role to bring Muslim countries together to fight terrorism. Our parliament failed to legislate tough laws against terrorism. Our politicians have been impeding Military Courts dealing with terrorists. It's shocking that some political parties are even involved with terrorists? With over 60,000 Pakistanis killed and the economy devastated, no country in the world has suffered and sacrificed more than Pakistan.

AD Dec 15, 2015 08:04pm

Long overdue.

Zahir Dec 15, 2015 08:48pm

Pakistan's interest come first, it can be part of the coalition in a passive capacity, training, etc., as Gen Raheel suggested Saudis in his recent meeting with them. As for Iran admirers, please ask Iran to withhold its Indian sponsored central asia corridor in parallel to CPEC.

Dinesh Dec 15, 2015 09:07pm

@Zak "We will defend our Saudi brothers at any cost."

Why? Militarily, nuclear Pakistan is the strongest of this grouping, and yet Saudis are leading the alliance.

Akbar Dec 15, 2015 09:10pm

So how many Syrian refugees did this countries take in? How many of these countries supported Pakistan in its war on terror in which a million Pakistani's have died? When Pakistan was losing the Bangladesh war or the Kargil war, which of these Muslim countries sent their troops in Pakistan's support? How many Countries give Pakistani's visa free access to their countries? Infact Indians get more priority access than Pakistani's.

No Alliance for Palestine and Libaration of Qibla e Awal.

Exlim Dec 15, 2015 10:36pm

Saudis can start by easing their anti shia agenda.

Palestinian kids, sisters and brothers are desperately looking for help from Muslim states and their Alliance to release them from Israeli terrorism. Iran is ready to lead Alliance to release First Qibla e Awal and Palestine , how many of Muslim states will join that alliance and say sorry to Saudi and American aids.

Define terrorism...I mean by whoes perspective are we looking at it?

Aa Dec 15, 2015 11:42pm

If it's Muslim then why iran , Iraq, Syria and labanon left out...this is more like a divided Muslim front and all the countries on it are actually not fighting against terrorism except for Pak. ..I think pakistan should stay far away from this group...and be part of the new world order...

zahid Dec 15, 2015 11:44pm

Pak-Iran-China-Russia alliance would be more effective and beneficial to the country

Sahil Dec 16, 2015 04:44am

Remember the alliance is against terrorists not against ISIS.Rubbish.

Great, but not enough, you all need to be united so outsiders cannot gang up on you and destroy you and your fragile unity. Work hard and not just unite your milliliters but increase vital cooperation in other areas such as education common curacy and common policy together and do not let others to come between you . Good Job Saudi-Arabia

Ali Raza Noor Dec 16, 2015 09:59am

@Waqas Did Iran wanted to over throw Syrias govt by military force. Check facts and also don't forget that it was this so called back stabbing country who helped Pakistan with arms and ammo in 65 and 71 wars. When so called Arab brothers supported us verbally.

Jaleel Dec 16, 2015 07:09pm

Alliance of muslim countries? Iran missing? Let us blame Israeel and the west for all our problems.

kashif Dec 17, 2015 12:17am

If they will support and fight for Palestinians when Israel attacks them, I will consider it a very good step. Otherwise it is just a front face to facilitate the America's agenda.

Arsalan Dec 17, 2015 01:10am

I think this announcement has more to do with projection of Crown Prince of KSA rather than anything else...It seems no one has been consulted when this new alliance was announced. On more serious note sidelining OIC and trying to create Shia Sunni blocks will have long term implications on security of all Muslim countries. If counter terrorism force has to be created , it should be done on platform of OIC with open and clear agenda, rules and mechanisms to deal with insurgencies in all participating countries ..Saudis should realize that thier Monarchy alone can not create or dictate a counter terrorism strategy for all Countries.

Islamic Nations alliance under the leadership of Saudi's , should we laugh or cry, This is all about to save their Monarchy and remove any threat to their rule, Nothing else. Pakistan should stay away from this FIRE & TRAP. Thank you

sami shahid Dec 18, 2015 12:25am

syria is in a need of joint muslim forces....pakistan should become a part of muslim forces...not any other like nato
