England edge Pakistan in super over to sweep T20 series

SHARJAH: Paceman Chris Woakes starred for a second match in succession as he defended ten runs in the last over to help England win the third and final Twenty20 in a Super Over finish in Sharjah on Monday.
Woakes conceded seven off the first two deliveries thanks to a six but managed to tie the game off the last ball as Pakistan faltered in the chase of a 155-run target.
Pakistan then managed just three runs in the Super Over bowled by Chris Jordan, which England scored off just four balls for a 3-0 clean sweep of the series.
The victory lifted England to fourth in the Twenty20 rankings while Pakistan, second before the series, fell to sixth.
England won the first match by 14 runs and the second by three runs with Woakes defending 11 in the last over -- both matches in Dubai.
Pakistan was unlucky not to win the match after Shoaib Malik smashed a career best 54-ball 75 for his fourth Twenty20 half century and added a quickfire 63 off just 38 balls for the sixth wicket with Shahid Afridi, who made a 20-ball 29.
Malik and Afridi joined company with Pakistan struggling at 65-5 as both took the attack to the English bowlers, much to the joy of a packed 16,000 stadium.
Afridi smashed three sixes off his 20-ball innings before he was bowled by paceman David Willey, who finished with 3-36.
Malik, whose previous best of 57 not out came against India at Banglaore in 2012, hit eight boundaries and two sixes but fell with just two needed for victory.
Pakistan were struggling at 11-3 after losing opener Ahmed Shehzad (four), Mohammad Hafeez to another run out for one and Raffatullah Mohmand (nought) by the third over.
Mohamamd Rizwan hit four boundaries in his 24 but he and Umar Akmal (four) fell in quick succession before Malik held the innings well.
Earlier James Vince hit a career-best 46 and Woakes (37) lifted England -- who won the toss and batted -- from a precarious 86-6 during their fighting 60-run stand for the seventh wicket to take them to 154-8.
Vince, promoted to open the innings after Alex Hales was rested, showed maturity by standing firm at one end as wickets fell at regular intervals. He hit three boundaries and a six during his resolute 45-ball knock.
Woakes smashed three sixes and a boundary off just 24 balls to give England some relief after leg-spinner Afridi (2-19) derailed England with two wickets in as many balls.
Afridi dismissed Joe Root (32) and Moeen Ali first ball after debutant Aamer Yamin provided Pakistan the early breakthrough with the wicket of Jason Roy (nought) off the first ball of his career.
Yamin became the first Pakistan and 11th bowler overall to take a wicket with his first ball in Twenty20 cricket, but only bowled two overs, finishing with 1-12.
Vince, dropped on 4 and 29, added 48 for the second wicket with Root.
Skipper Eoin Morgan managed 15 and Jos Buttler just two.
Lanky paceman Mohammad Irfan, playing his first match in this Twenty20 series, conceded 40 in his four overs while Sohail Tanvir took two late wickets and finished with figures of 2-36.

I think it's time to stop watching cricket till Afridi, U Akmal, Hafeez, Sohail Tanvir, Ahmed Shehzad and Waqar Younis (coach) leave Pakistan cricket. Afridi had played his best cricket years ago and was never successful as Captain. Waqar Younis was never successful as Captain and now as Coach but it's Pakistan cricket history to keep opportunities to failures.

What a match! Absolute thriller. But there are huge issues for Pakistan in batting. Their top order batsmen just don't know how to build an innings or rotate strike. Shehzad is all style, no substance. Rafatullah should be dropped. He is not unto international standard. Hafeez is terrible with his running. Umar Akmal never performs when team needs him. Rizwan finally played today but he has failed. Only saving grace is Shoaib Malik who is bowling and batting well but threw his wicket away at the end. Afridi is unreliable. Ideally Afridi and Malik should have finished the game. Huge fielding and fitness issues for Pakistan. Amazing superover by Chris Jordan. I don't know why Pakistan didn't send Shoaib Malik since he just got out. What was Anwar Ali doing. Couldn't collect a simple throw. This was overall a bad performance by Pakistan. Lots of issues with fielding, bowling, batting, rotating strike, running between wickets, planning and strategy and team selection.

Time to say goodbye to Afridi before it's toolate. His ability to lead the team has badly been exposed. On top of that, a poor team selection. Not a singl genuine pace bowler...where is Imran Khan? Not a single good hitter...where is Mukhtar? Why Umar Akmal keeps getting chances again and again despite his miserable performance over quite some time...
Why selectors let Yasir Shah play BD league while he is needed more in national side...a state of total mess...3 runs in super over...for heaven's sake!!!

There should not be a place for Irfan, Rafiuttulla, Sarfraz and Tanweer in the Pak T 20 team. Irfan's poor batting and very poor fielding are the reason Rafiuttulla does not have the capacity to clear the field and as such can only be utilised as an opener. Sarfraz does not have any stroke other than sweep or sweep log to the fine leg square leg. Tanweer can not bowl to the field set and his fielding is below average.

Where have all the Professors disappeared to. Still running I wonder. So glad that this T20 series is now over and we don't have to be embarrassed further and watch in disbelieve. Can anyone explain why Shoaib Malik and Aamir Yamin did not bowl their full quota of four overs each and that is a huge crime. As for the batting if the two best batsman in the side go out for a super over and manage only 3 runs in six balls what chance do we have. Management and captain are accountable for making us the laughing stock in T20s a few comical catches dropped, running between the wickets, poor fielding and comical ways of getting out trying to paddle sweep offside deliveries to leg. Shoaib Malik until he got out was cut above the rest in terms of batting approach and aptitude he also bowled well and a real shame Afridi did not let him bowl his four overs. That's why I think it needed a professor out there to work out Malik was bowling well.

Poor decision making on and off the field. Pak won test matches due to spin and it was mind boggling to Pak use only 6 overs of spin while England bowls 8. Afridi has never grown as a batsman and its showing in his leadership skills too.

Our pacers in death overs donot seem to have good control.If they have not learnt by now, Donot think they can be tought may be time to bring a new crop of pacers. Yorkers were consipicous by their absence. May be umar Gul can teach them a thing or two.Perhaps Amir with Yamin will be nucleus of new attack? Match was exciting though,Sad to see Pak team loose. Time to reflect and make thoughtful changes

Anwar Ali is not up to international standard. Waqar Younis is not an international coach. Each time the team lose a game their interviews end with we will learn from our mistakes. SO What have they learnt from all the recent losses in ODI's and T20's? Absolutely nothing because they have the same players who simply cant play anymore...Umar Akmal is batting to low, what happened to sarfraz Ahmed...are you saying that Riffat a 39 year old is better than him? After watching this t20, I can safely say we need a major overhaul in cricket. Our domestic cricket is not a good indicator of talent. We are way behind in fitness category. Our fielding is a real sad story. And finally what are all the coaches getting paid for - to watch us lose. This calls for major overhaul otherwise cricket will be our next hockey.

It was totally absurd to see Umar Akmal being sent to play the super over when Shoaib Malik had just been in the mod of hitting big. Had they sent Umar in other situations, I would not have complained but a super over should always be played by some one who is in form exactly on that specific day and in Shoaib's case, his body was still warm to start from where he fished just a couple of overs ago.

This team will not win the World Cup. Changes need to be made fast and players should not be selected based on past performance. Only current players with good performance should be in the team. Also it is about time that we get a coach who was a batsman. Waqar has failed as a coach. He could not even get the fast bowlers to learn to bowl Yorkers towards the end of the innings.

Afridi is very much to be blamed for losing the 3 matches. He got Rafatulla and Umar Akmal in and both failed. Team selection Fir all 3 matches was wrong. Hafeez needs to retire from all sorts of cricket. Afridi should give up his dream of winning in the World Cup with this team. Bring players who want to WIN and who can run ( unlike Hafeez).

It has been a good series, its unfortunate that Pakistan has lost. Need to throw Rafatullah, Maqsood and Imran khan jrn out of team. Waqar Younis and Management team is poor. They dont select the best team. Amir needs to be picked, he has been performing really well in BPL and he is a million times better than Imran Khan Jrn. Sharjeel Khan needs to be brought back. He is young and aggressive which we need. He shows positive intent. Pakistan is a strong contender for World T20 but only if they select the right players. Waqar Younis is trying too many experiments which is resulting in losses of Pak team.

Pakistan players need to find more shorts. Every player when play fell like ballers is letting him play and they can take them out anytime. No batsmen got a proper technique once pak great mohsin khan said all our players are playing kuhara(axe) cricket. Every team need two or three sloggers and more proper cricketers. All sloggers should come at right time and make situation for proper cricketer to bring match home. Slogger can just bring team close to winning and sell some tickets but cannot win a match all the time. At the moment thing look very bleak for proper cricketer in team.

This is what happens when team selection is based on "ism" and favoritism. Sarfaraz was again dropped from the team for no valid reasons. Even a child knows Sarfaraz Ahmed and Fawwad Alam are repeatedly being punished for belonging to a particular ethinic group.
We kept on playing an army of medium pacers on UAE wickets while it was noticed that in all 3 T20s, spinners were more potent. With T20 World Cup being in India it was common sense to try as many spinners as possible.
One fails to understand the inclusion of 40 year old Mohmand, he is not even a power hitter. Ahmed Shazad and Umer Akmal were a complete failure once again. Why are we not including Aamir to the team? he is bowling really well in the BPL.
If we continue with such strategies. We have absolutely no chance in the upcoming T20 World Cup.

Pakistan Cricket needs a major overhaul and a complete revamp from the grass root level to the top leadership. It should work on the basics of the game rather than getting indulged in complex methodology and should be based on merit. It should infuse modern mindset and skills into the game. Pakistan Cricket has to educate and train it's youngster the basics of the game and make them work hard to learn the art at a professional level.

Afridi is playing as a bowler. By chance he hit a few sixes These days fans expect zero from him. He should not have played the super over. Every bowl to him has a 50% chance of being out. It was a good game until the super over. Pakistan team can loose there nerve anytime in the game. Any result can be arranged and even their best in form batsman can not make 3 runs in an over or use his brain to play safely to win. Intikhab Alam was right. These cricket players dont have brains. It is not fitness. Afridi was fully fit in super over.Take training from Miandad how to keep your nerve and take the match to win when so close.

I think from toss, pakistan needs to understand how to win toss. Keep spinning toss and 99% people knows that if you spin toss the result will be HEADS. Pakistani captains always do like this. What Pak team Analyst is doing?

Afridi will burst out when the media ask him polietly about the performance and where are we standing in ICC ranking. Why you are taking Sohail Tanveer, poor bowling and fielding. Replace with any good spinner younger guy.

What a terrible super over by Afridi and Umar Akmal. Afridi thought he could outsmart the bowler by thinking he can hit the ball for a six by swinging the bat so hard but gets dot balls. He clearly underestimated the bowler and he deserved it and same with Akmal. Well played England with the ball and bat in the super over. You played more sensible inning than Afridi and Akmal. Afridi and Akmal should be kicked out before it's too late.

Really surprised to see what happened during match last night...
Its not a cricket lose .this is totally mentality weakness..
Malik was a hero but he also feel pressure in last over..
Tanvir go for 4 or 6 blindly..
Truly speaking t20 also raising talent but also spoiling it .
Last over shows us cricket is also about mental strength..
In my opion tanvir is a bowler we cant blame him..but he could b the hero..
But malik should take 100% responsibility to make it for pak..
I also watched pak t20.. Matches
What i m seeing..
All the youngsters want to hit out ou f the park every tym rather than to build up the innings..
Cricket is not all about hitting...its also a mind game.
And srry brothers..
We usually see when pak loses captain is blamed and changed ..they changed it many times.
Pak cricket lovers should support afridi n the entire team..and youngsters should copy inzi miandad
Rather than to be superman to hit always when there may b no need to hit

@Wasi .... Dear I m from India and follow pakistan cricket passionately. I have seen many players coming and going in pakistan team, but never come across an accomplished batsman than Umar Akmal & Shehzad in current batch of players. It is about the management to utilize the skills. I remember India persisting with Rohit Sharma for unlimited failures till he got the resulted and look he is a permanent member now.
it is about putting faith in ur lads and keeping the management who know cricket, not politics.
I suggest if pakistan can change the management, your boys have the potential to deliver at any field against any opposition.

Is there any genuine cricketer in current Pakistani Team whom the youngsters idealize and start following ? When Misbah was In charge people started blaming him to bring a defensive mentality in team and wanted someone like Afridi now same people are complaining Afridi for being always in a "Sixer Mode". Once Shoaib Akhtar Said, young lads always follow the super star in the team. Indians got Sachin and got the Batting inspiration from him till dacades. Pakistan got Imran Khan and Wasim Waqar Aqib took inspiration from him followed by Shoaib, Asif and Amir. Pakistan has the history of follower ship in batting too, let us start from Zaheer, Majid, Asif Iqbal, Javed Miandad, Salim Malik, Ejaz, Inzimam, Saeed Anwar, Basit Ali, Younis Khan, Misbah all are products of some follower ship. Current team has only one super star that is Afridi and no wonder young guys are following him. While no one is in the bowling lineup yet to look for inspiration.

For me the mess has been created gradually by not having a long term planning in good days so now there is no use of beating about the same bushes and have to keep some patience, let this team be given a chance to learn from their mistakes they are young and talented but lacks the teamwork, physical and mental strength required to win matches. We do not have any choice to stick with this lot of guys until they start getting mature by learning from their mistakes. Changing captains, Coaches who are trying to create balance in the team is not at all the solution. The coach doesn't matter how strong or weak he is would never play in the field its the 11 players who need to gel themselves as the team and follow the strategy made by their Captain and coach.

@Semab Well-said. However, after losing T20, he called for analysis. So, that could mean closing the one eye that was opened by ODIs. No wonder, the two games are different.

The selectors are not really professionals. Rafiuttulla age 39 was selected with very high words about his domestic performance. Public was anxious to see his batting but unfortunately to me he does not deserve a place even in school team. Thanks to Haroon Rashid and company. He played all the three matches why especially when they have tested him first T-20? Anyone can see he does not know how to bat. Ignoring talented all rounder Abdul Razak is a matter of personality clashes/meanness. Secondly, I failed to understand why Shahid hold two overs of Shoaib Malik especially when he saw the below standard performance of his fast bowlers. He himself should bowl towards the end. Poor team selection, poor batting, bowling and fielding what is left! The answer from the captain is that we have identified some grey areas to improve and we are working on it. Improvement is required if there are some minor issues at this level but in Pakistani team there are 100 of issues. Hafeez does not know the basic – running between the wicket - how to make calls/respond to take a run. I remember when we use to play back in early 1970s for Cantt Public school we use to only focus on fielding and fitness level. In Pakistani camp it appears fielding practice seems to be the job of only youngsters. Feel sorry to see the helplessness of our fast bowlers, drop catches and running between the wickets.
