Edhi declines Indian PM Modi's donation

KARACHI: Celebrated humanitarian Abdul Sattar Edhi on Tuesday declined the offer of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to donate 10 million Indian rupees to his charity.

"Abdul Sattar Edhi has thanked Mr Modi and politely declined to accept his announced financial help," Edhi Foundation Spokesman Anwar Kazmi said.

Kazmi said Mr Edhi's son, Faisal Edhi, will be addressing a press conference in this regard at 4:30pm at Karachi Press Club.

Modi on Monday announced the contribution to the charity after the return of hearing and speech impaired girl Geeta to India.

“What the Edhi family has done is too priceless to be measured but I am happy to announce a contribution of Rs10 million for their foundation,” Modi tweeted on Monday.

Found on a train that had crossed the border from India into the eastern Pakistani city of Lahore, Geeta remained in Pakistan under the care of the country's largest welfare organisation, the Edhi Foundation in Karachi for more than a decade.

After identifying a family as her own through a picture sent by Indian officials, Geeta finally returned to India on Monday with Mr Edhi's wife Bilquis Edhi.

But in a tragic twist, just hours after arriving in Delhi, she told officials she did not know the family.

India's external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj vowed to find her parents after a DNA test.

Relations between the Pakistan and India are at their lowest ebbs with allegations of ceasefire violations and involvement in terrorism from both sides.

Planned talks between national security advisers from India and Pakistan were canceled in August hours before they were due to start, dashing hopes the two might tackle the violence that many fear could one day spark a nuclear showdown.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif during his speech at the 70th session of UN General Assembly earlier this month, presented a four point peace initiative to resolve all issues with India.

But India rejected the peace plan accusing Pakistan of promoting terrorism in the region, Pakistan handed over three dossiers of Indian involvement of terrorism inside Pakistan to UN chief.

when I heard the news deep down inside I knew that was coming. I used to live near one of the Edhi house (apna Ghar) and i know them they newer accept mpney from governments. Had it been any other so called charitable NGO they would have glee fully accepted and would have asked for more. Long live EDHI

Sad to hear that although the right things to do by Edhi Foundation. I wish Modo had not spread so much hatred towards Pakistan. You should never refuse a gift but in this case hard to accept anything from a MODI. Sorry my indian brothers but look at what you elected as a prime minister who was not even allowed into the US prior to him becoming the head of secular India. What Ehdi did was our duty as per our faith and it is no favour to you and you don't need to fee obligated.

To those that are saying this is a great gesture - and the money should be accepted. I think instead of 'buying' the will of Pakistanis through this, Modi should have been more vociferous over the last few weeks when Shiv Sena forced Ghulam Ali to cancel a concert, broke into a meeting between the BCCI and the PCB, forced Aleem Dar to stand down from an ICC-sanctioned cricket match and got Wasim and Shoaib effectively 'deported' from India. Against that backdrop, how can Edhi possibly accept the donation. Always remember, Edhi is a man of principles - not a money grabbing corrupt politician.

Excellent Edhi Sahab, you would have been a Noble laureate had you been in any other country; A lesson to Actors and Singers who are dying to get themselves "exposed" in Indian movies (almost all actresses from Pakistan done this in India). I wonder if Adnan Sami should be called a Pakistani now and be allowed to enter Pakistan ever?

Please search the documentary on Abdul Sattar Edhi Sahab, he mention in that documentary that he only take donation from Pakistani People and if he need money he come on the street and people give him Money. This is not the first time Edthi Sahab refuse the donation, it is his policy and he know this nation got very big heart so they spend on Charity. So my Indian Friends please do find documentary on Edhi Sahab and you will know the answer and nothing negative in it

It was the right thing to do, to show that humanitarian work is not done for any monitory award. I think what Edhi has done is to set a path for all humanitarian organizations to work with out any consideration for ethnicity, religion, and country and stay away from the politicians.

I don't see any reason for declining Modi's donation. Unless there is a legal reason to decline the donation, Edhi is a charity which looks after the needy irrespective of caste, creed or national origin (as evidenced by Geeta's case). It could have put such money to good use as it has done for a number of decades. For a number of years Pakistani patients have been going to India for complicated medical procedures such as organ transplants, etc. then why should we Pakistani's show (unnecessary) patriotism on issues of charity and goodwill? I am sure people will keep on donating to the Edhi Foundation (as I will) but every donation helps.

@RAJ CHAUDARY I am not sure about the exact reason. I think the current political circumstances could be a reason. It is a pity why neighboring countries cant live in love and harmony. However, when I read the news yesterday about the 1 million donation, I was disappointed. Reason being that for a large country like India and for a large organisation like Eidhi foundation, 1 million INR is peanuts and rather insulting. Some normal upper-middle class people in Pakistan give more charity than this. The generosity should be proportional to the cause and I don't think Modi truly appreciates the cause of Eidhi. If it was me I would have given USD 10 million. The donation should be of a value that could be portrayed as if its coming from a big country who actually respects Eidhi. And please don't think that something is better than nothing. Eidhi is the largest voluntary ambulance service in the world and gets really good funds. The amount is insulting to India and to Eidhi as well.

What people do not understand is that this amount does not matter for Edhi Foundation given the charity that they receive from Pakistanis across the world. Statistically, Pakistan is the most charitable nation in the world. For them, it was a humanitarian gesture to one of the child amongst thousands others lives they have affected to date. So there is no reason for them to make this into a big issue or a marketing gimmick. Life goes on and they will continue to help other people. This is the beauty of people like Edhi. Something that Indian and Pakistani politicians should learn. There is nothing that cannot be saved.

The One crore Indian Rupees would have been One crore sixty lakh Pakistani rupees. A decent sum for doing charity for hundreds of more people in distress. They may dislike Modi but the money is on behalf the Indian Public, not Modi ji's personal contribution and therefore it should not have been rejected keeping in mind it could help hundreds of people in need of help.

There is the right way of donating and then there is the wrong way. Modi went about it all wrong by announcing it on twitter. He should have contacted Edhi directly (not via media) and should have asked that they would like to donate and if Edhi will accept. Modi's twitter message is basically saying 'here's the payment for looking after Geeta' and Edhi is not the type of man who looks after people in return for payment. Modi should've been far more respectful in his approach to Edhi.

Edhi Sahab rightly refused, as it was announced rom a person who is at the helm of affairs when terrorism and extremism against minorities is at highest level in a so-called secular country.

i see that it was a good gesture from Indian government. But problem is that countries are on the verge of war right now. So, far Indian army had been continuously firing and violating all rules set by UN. Now when Pak army will start, things will get messy. Definitely will be more money for west if there will be war. that is the way we are headed to right now. an attack on india is foreseen.

Too quick to give donation on Mr. Modi's part and twice as quick in refusing it by Edhi. Both Parties should have waited a bit in making gesture and reaction. Now those in favor of refusing; can come they forward and match Mr. Modi's donation?

@Naseem ... My aim as a person is to save the lives of people... donation is donation and it does not know what cast, creed, or religion gives it... Can we really believe that we are living a good life, an ethically decent life if we don't do anything serious to help reduce poverty around the world and help save the lives of children or adults who are likely to die if we don't increase the amount of aid we are giving.... A good act of charity should should always be appreciated regardless of who so ever gives...

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Government of India failed to give a sensible advice to their PM, the timings for saying or doing something is an art in diplomacy. At a right time a remark can be a jewel but at a wrong time a teaser! It was even against the usual South Asian Culture, it could be announced later on.

I dont see any flaw from accepting donation from a country. I am sure Modi wasnt giving 10mil from his pocket. It would have been from government of India and it might have done some good. Anyways, Edhi has done a lot of good and he reserves right to run his organization as he sees fit.

I think there are more lessons to be learnt from Geeta's story after the initial fanfare cools down 1- making travelling and movement easy cross the border 2- Both Govt should commit themselves to do best to help stranded citizen into each other's country, right now, any unfortunate one loosing travel documents or smaller visa voilation could cost them a life in jail, or otherwise suffering. One may refer the story of old Pakistani microbiologist spending all his life India, stranded in a case, where even full sentence would have been only 5 years in jail, if proven. There should be lessons, and not the mutual slanging instead. I wish Geeta best of luck back in home, and also wish the govt to be humane

Edhi foundation does not accept donations from political figures. They accept it from common citizens. Indians should not take offense to this. It is their policy. If any Indian donates in personal capacity, they will not refuse it. Edhi foundation has never been short of cash as well. They command such respect and trust in Pakistan that they people donate generously without announcing it. Despite the modest appearance of Edhi Sb, he manages largest charity work worth billions. I hope people from across the border will understand. Political tone is bad for their noble work and they avoid it.

@khanm No Khanm, if Edhi foundation does not accept donation or financial aid from any government, then who are we to say that a "donation is donation". One reason for not accepting from government is that they are not influenced by the them in future. Mr Edhi has said that when he needs money, he goes and stand on the road with the collection box and people give what ever they want to give. You should respect his decision.

Edhi Sahab has always turned down donations from ALL governments. This is their policy, and not necessarily a pointed refusal of INDIAN money. The Edhi Foundation has refused to take money from other governments -- including the government of Pakistan -- in the past. This in no way means he is against these nations, or their nationals. Let's please not turn everything into a confrontation between "two enemies," and an excuse for scoring points against anyone.

Whatever his reasons for not accepting, we in India still appreciate what he did and will continue to do so. I am still glad the PM offered the donation since it was the right thing to do and in the hands of the Edhi foundation it would have definitely gone on to some good cause.

Mr.Abdul Sattar Edhi has done the appropriate thing by refusing to accept the money offered by P.M. Modi. Edhi has done a humanitarian gesture by taking care of Geeta. He has got his reward. Unfortunately, it seems that Mr. Modi, has not been showing the humanitarian character that a leader of India should have. He has failed in living up to the image of a leader of India. He seems to be the leader of one particular religion. That defies the modern age, the history of India and above all the independence of India. Mr. Edhi simply outshines Mr Modi in this story.

I think both Modi and Edhi did the right thing. Modi expressed gratitude with a substantial amount and Edhi effectively proved beyond doubt that he does not do this looking for a reward. I am sure his organization will be plenty well funded by others impressed by his work.

Edhi worked for people all his life and he knows its not a good idea to take money from a person who is responsible for killing of thousands of innocent people in Gujrat and an undeclared terrorist. Anyways 1 crore or 2 crore for Edhi foundation are peanuts who runs the largest fleet of ambulances in the world.

@vijay I am not sure if you have ever been to Pakistan, but in June 2006, I spent a whole week in India - and know from personal experience how Indian media would have reported this if Edhi had accepted the donation. The headlines would have been more like 'Pak Demands Rs. 10 Million for returning Geeta', or 'Money Grabbing Edhi asked India to pay for housing Geeta'. This would feed down very quickly to the masses - and everyone in India would instantly become 'anti-Edhi'. In 2006, when I was there, Kofi Annan was stepping down as UN General Secretary, and India wanted Shashi Taroor to take over - but the numbers were against him. Papers in India were blaming Pakistan for not supporting Taroor, or putting up their own challengers etc - all stories that were fabricated with the sole purpose of embarrassing Pakistan, when in reality it is the US that 'decides'. Does Edhi really deserve that type of treatment from the press and people of India? Absolutey not !!!

Edhi foundation is way way way above the politics, secret agents, Army forces, hatred etc. The organisation's policy says that they don't accept donations from any government. The policy was not established last night. It has a background. We should go back and continue donating to Edhi foundation and other good NGOs in best of our capacity. You like Mr Modi or not.. I feel that it is irrelevant here.

First of all , I must say Edhi is the real principled man. He has self respect and other Pakistani officials should learn from his gesture of refusing the badly needed money based on his principles. Secondly, people of both nations must understand that politicians will and have been benefiting by inciting people against each other. This is the same technique British used in India against Muslims and Hindus. It is called 'divide and rule'. The only difference now is that unfortunately we use it against our own people, and British don't do that to their own citizens.

Hence Edhi did the right thing. People would have said, 'well you looked after her you got the money, so what?'

This was not PM Narendra Modi's money being donated but that was a token of gratitude to the Pakistani charity from the Government of India which he currently duly presides. Therefore a gift from people of India that feel obliged towards the kindness of their neighbouring state ought to have been, in my opinion, accepted by them. However, their non-acceptance doesn't in anyway diminish the good work Mr Abdus Sattar Edhi and his comrades are doing for the community!!!

I can understand some readers point of view that it was Government of India money that means its people of India money, its true. But at the same time we shouldn't forget all things around right. I am always vary of people who do things after the fact. Like in this case PM Modi's donation. The whole of sub continent knows the Amazing work Edhi Foundation does, so does PM Modi. If he wanted to donate anything, he did not have to wait for Geeta to land in India, he could have donated this money anything, But he did not, he waited. he waited for the right time and right opportunity. That is absolutely wrong. There is no right time or opportunity to help. Everytime is the right time. I am proud of Edhi Foundation for taking that stand.

The difference is that Edhi made his name by getting his hands dirty rescuing babies, orphans and corpses of people that nobody else wanted to touch. Edhi's Saheb's greatness is one of the few things in today's world that makes the world livable. Everywhere you see, we human beings have become so selfish, ready to cut each other's throats for trivial benefits. Everyday hundreds of innocents Muslims and Non Muslims get killed. Then you see the noble life of Molana Edhi Saheb and you say that there still is some humanity. I am sure Edhi Saheb would have had reasons to refuse the donation. Knowing his sincerity to mankind and selfless nature, we support him in his every decision.

Well, it's okay that they have refused this money. As i understand the foundation doesn't accept money from political parties/government so that there is no influence on them. @prasant Edhi is the largest non-government ambulance service in the world!!! It has helped out during natural disasters all over the world, besides ofcourse having presence all over Pakistan. It runs women shelters, orphanages, shelters for abandoned children, ambulance service and homes for the elderly. Look up Edhi foundation before comparing small non governmental organisations in India to Edhi Foundation. It is huge, and a source of pride for PAkistanis, not just any random "bajrangi bhaijan". And as someone else here said, Indians cant seem to comprehend the scale of this organisation started by a lone Edhi decades ago, and neither can their govt pledging peanuts to this huge organisation.

We love and respect you and know that humans are always humans first whether they are Muslims, Christians ,Jews, Hindus or Sikhs or other religion it does not matter. The best thing I think and I am very proud of is the fact that you knew this girl was a Hindu and therefore made a Mandir for her so that she could pray and that I think is what Islam is all about. As far as Mr Modhi is concerned we don't need any donations but if you really care about people on both sides then let's sort our differences out amicably and have a true and lasting peace with no blame games. Live and let live.

Before arriving at the amount Finance Minster, Arun Jaitley calculated the amount that Edhi Foundation would have spent on Geeta for keeping her for 10 years with interest an dthen they doubled it to come at the figure of 1 crore. This was done to show we will not take any obligation from Pakistan. In this respect I thing money was not the issue, point is care and humanity shown towards the girl. So intention was not right. And donation of only 10 M from a huge country like India, very sad! Further, Edhi foundation does not take any donations from Governments!

Hats off to the generosity shown by Edhi foundation. They have the right to accept or reject. On the contrary no need to go overboard on this subject. Hundreds to Thousands of Pakistanis come to India for their specialized medical treatments. In most cases, the hospitals provide excellent care at subsidized rates. Secondly in many cases, money is raised by local Indians for such treatments. This occurs almost every day and unfortunately hardly gets any appreciation or media coverage.

While I tremendously admire Mr. Edhi and his family for doing the great humanitarian work; I am at a loss to understand why he declined the donation from the Indian Prime Minister. By accepting the donation to his causes he would have risen above petty definitions of "Us Vs Them" and showed, as he is doing, the world how to live in peace and harmony and how to lead the way. It's a well known fact that Edhi foundation doesn't take money from foreign Govt. and even to some extent no donations from non-Pakistanis either. It's their principled stance held for quite long. The reason given was one of self-respect, and second they wanted Pakistanis to come out and help Pakistanis and encourage that cooperation. The Edhi Foundation has done it in the past as well and it has nothing to do with Modi specific action. So no point to celebrate or disgust at it. Many people here don't know about that long held stance. Secondly, I would urge Modi to relocate the same money to displaced women and children cause in India and their rehabilitation, it will only further Edhi foundation's work for humanity.

Edhi foundation has every right to accept/reject contribution but should explain the reason. In Modi's words, he basically said that it is too priceless but still like to contribute to the foundation as a token of appreciation. This should be looked as an acknowledgement from Indian Govt and hope to motivate at least few out of 1.2 billion to contribute for foundations like this. They may not need money for themselves but will allow them to help more. Also note that it is Indians tax payer money and Modi is not giving from his pocket. Hope readers acknowledge that as well

Before jumping the gun and trying to politicize Edhi Saheb's refusal of Modi's donation, it would have been much better to wait for Faisal Edhi's press conference. They way I understand, Edhi Foundation does not accept donations from governments or government organizations, Pakistan government included. The Foundation fears that accepting funds from any government gives a political dimension to its humanitarian objectives. In addition, such funding has a potential of comprising its autonomy. I would not be surprised if Edhi Foundation would accept donations from Indian citizens.

Understood the donation was for a noble cause but accepting the donation would have been made political and the cause for which Edhi foundation stand may have been diluted. Don't expect the general suspicion on each other would have vanished by this donation. This suspicion will only go when there is more trade and people to people contact on equal footing.

I thought humble donation was a perfect gesture from an Indian to Edhi's trust in response to an excellent social service. This is how anyone not part of the trust can contribute to the great work it is doing. I don't think any amount can eclipse the original act. This decline somehow doesn't leave a good feeling in me. Edhi foundation never takes publicized and image building kind of donations, I've never come across news of some businessmen or individual donating to Edhi with full public and media view. Everything is secretly guarded for posterity and pride. Also it is against the teaching of Islam to make public your charity and philanthropic work, as it will be against the posterity and image of the person/organization you are giving. This is between you and your God...nothing more.

The refusal of the Edhi Foundation to accept PM Modi's offer of Rs. 1 crore for whatever reason, shows their incorruptibility and the principled nature of their policy. It cannot be that the Foundation is not in need of funds. This should clearly demonstrate to the would-be donor that not everybody sacrifices a principle for money. He should also understand that honesty and the democratic principle of the right to be different should be honoured in the observance and not in the breach.

I see it in two parts. Part one- Edhi foundation is absolutely correct in declining Mr.Modi's gift. This organisation is world famous for its great humanitarian services done purely on charity and rightly thought accepting Mr.Modi's gift make them look like mercenary organization. Part two- The India a grateful nation overwhelmed by such a tremendously selfless and movingly humane action of this great organization wanted to show how grateful the country is made a token donation knowing it can really never be able to payback and no disrespect intended. It is a case where both are right and the real winner is human kindness.

Edhi did the right thing by taking care of Geeta and helping her find her family. Modi did the right thing by acknowledging the good work Edhi has done and by announcing the donation so that Edhi can help more such people in need. If Edhi says they don't need the money, I don't see an issue, it is their prerogative. They should not be targeted for doing something good (taking care of the girl in this case).

Some people and some organizations are above the monetary stage. They do these things with a genuine heart and they do these acts not for the earthly delights, but they have a higher purpose. All those who are making this a Pak vs. India issue: Edhi never takes money from any Govt, including Pakistan, and from any political parties. In the past many Pakistani political parties tried this but failed. Any Indian is welcome to send money to Edhi directly. Love each other for the sake of Bollywood at least :)

Pakistan must study PM Modi well. He offered help during flood in Kashmir, during Earth quick also and to EDHI Foundation also. Please understand that accepting or not accepting is EDHI's Decision and we respect that, but do not make it a big deal as so many Indians think exactly same as EDHI Foundation and remember, we are still Indian and we will still fight for Kashmir. Do Not mix the things

@Sunil Sunil Sahib, Mr Edhi does not accept money even from Pakistan government. Be nazir Bhutto wanted to give money after her election as Prime minister of Pakisan. Mr Edhi politely declined saying , He begs for the needy from the ordinary Citizens of Pakistan. He is free from Ethic, Religious, Nationalist or any other kind of Complexes. We are lucky that despite the scarcity of Honest political leadership, we have Saint like Abdul Sattar Edhi.

Charity has no price. A small act kindness can change everything. If it wasn't accepted then it doesn't means that Edhi declined because he hates Modi or Indians, he's just following his ideals " believing that charity given by Pakistanis is enough". That's all.. He even rejected donations from Bill Gates several years ago.. If others are spewing hate let them be they will eventually quiet down once they see no body cares. Hatred is defeated by love, so love more, be humble, compassionate, amd, show humility.

His believe is that donations from Pakistanis is enough and its his way of uniting the people of Pakistan and we should respect it. He even rejected donations from Bill Gates several years ago. Maybe if the donation was anonymous it would have been accepted but I don't know. Again it wasn't rejected because of hatred. Cheers !! Have good day human:)

@Befree It's principle decision based on Well devised policy of not accepting money from local or foreign Governments. As far, 1 crore 60 Lakh Pakistani Rupees are concerned, Mr Edhi can Cellect this much amount by just sranding for 5 minutes in Middle class locality of Lahore, Peshawar Karachi, Quetta or any small city of Pakistan

An unfortunate act from Mr. Edhi. A man of his status should stand much higher than common dirty politics of the two neighbors. Modi's gesture is praise worthy and Mr. Edhi could have used the money for the benefit of the very people for whom he has devoted his entire life.

Neither fund is coming out from the Govt and not from Mr. Modi personal pocket nor this will be for Mr. Edhi's personal use. Its a great cause for Edhi Founation where people from all walks of life get benefit. This should not be declined by Edhi or anyone else from his family. Edhi and his family members are the executive members of Foundation and not running their family business.

Edhi sahib declared years ago that I am a Pakistani working for Pakistanis. I will only take money from Pakistanis. He has in the past declined donations from other foreign sources as well.

Donation was given in a hurry - can't complain as it's a good gesture. Similarly donation was refused in a hurry - can't complain either, that was again a good gesture and their own personal choice. However IMHO when the reality jumps in, I hope Edhi foundation doesn't reanalyse their decision. As I' am sure "every" charity in the world requires money to looks after needed people like Geetha. Having discussed enough on this donation thing, nobody should forget the service/love/care/affection showered over Geetha by Edhi foundation people.

If the donation was declined due to hatred against MODI or Politics..then it's wrong. Anyway, no charity can be equalled with money...So, in a way EdHi saaheb did right thing. Mr.MODI - also did the right thing.. PAKiSTAN can expect equally good response from INDiA soon. The relations will be improved only through this small-small incidents.

Request to Pakistani friends - judge a person by his actions not by media created perception ... And Indian Supreme Court have not found a thing against him yet and remember the trial was run when congress was in power and they used every trick in the book to convict him but failed. Secondly Edhi wud have done better to accept it. We know they are rich organisation and 1 million INR may be nothing for them but it is not the money, it's the gratitude shown by people of India towards that group for taking care of our daughter - nothing more ... Its his ideal that money should only be taken from Pakistanis / Christians, Hindus, Sikhs, Jews (public) as long as there are no political parties or governments involved. If you or your friends would like to donate, then donate it privately. He believes that humanitarian work should be separate from government and political agendas.

Geeta is in the foundation care for a while. Now, the foundation has returned Geeta, so suddenly Mr. Modi wants to give 10 M rps which is nothing for India. @Chaghtai For Mr Edhi even the Nobel Prize is not big enough. I have great respect for him. His refusal for Modi's politically motivated donation is a wonderful decision. Mr Edhi made every Pakistani proud by not accepting the money for the act of kindness done to Geeta for taking good care of her for a decade because she was someone's daughter and was in need of help being deaf and a child girl. Pakistanis in general are excellent human beings.

As far as I know that Edhi foundation does not accept donations from any government, they even refused taking ambulances from Japanese government then Japanese government gave them to the Punjab government. EDHI foundation policy is not to take donations from government and aid agencies because sometimes that money comes with some agenda. He only accept money from ordinary people who give money out of love and sympathy.

As a nation we (both Pakistan and India) need to grow up. This hatred sowed in by people who wanted to divide and rule must end for betterment of people on both the sides. This gesture showed by Modi should have been used to improve the relations. How wonderful it would have been if Edhi had declined saying "Geeta was our Guest and taking care of our guest is our duty. We cannot accept any thing in return".

There is no shame in accepting donation from Modi. But if Idhi sahab has rejected the donation, there must a good reason behind it. But however, this foundation did well so as the Modi government. There was nothing Mr. Modi could do but to offer some money. This money belonged to the fund announced for the NGO's in India. If he has offered that donation then there is nothing new or wrong done by Mr. Modi but a good gesture. But anyways, Long Live Edhi sahab. The refusal will be seen as a snub in India and will not help the cause of those who genuinely want to build better ties with Pakistan in India. Perhaps Eidhi should have explained that they dont accept government funds, so people would know it wasnt a snub. The refusal is only going to lead to more misunderstanding.

Those saying Edhi sb should have accepted and his rejection was political are failing to understand that Modi and his advisers know all too well the principle stance of Edhi Foundation on pubic announced donations from politicians, celebrities and governments. If Modi didn't know these facts, then he was either ignorant or just plain stupid for a PM not to know these things. If Modi was really sincere in donating to Edhi, it should have been done quietly and through a private channel. @Ananomous Sir donations amount is always token. How big NGO is will not dictate how much amount one should pay. Anayways cause of Idhi is noble. I would love no politics over it.

The fact is that Mr Modi offered it as a good gesture and Mr Edhi refused it as it was against his principle to accept money from heads of state..as simple as that..I guess there's no need to read more into it..and yes, thank you Edhi foundation !!

In this day and age when Pakistanis are not exactly being treated well in India. IT is refreshing to see Pakistan and its citizens still uphold their true nature and heritage of warmth and hospitality. For that we dont need money how about you start treating Pakistanis who are your guests with the same dignity and hospitality as we treat yours.

I believe Edhi did the right thing in not accepting the donation. Governments should not donate to foreign charities and charities should not accept foreign donations. It will lead to conflict of interest or compromise of values. God forbid, what if tomorrow Modi does something against Pakistan? How will the Edhi people feel about it after accepting the donation? What will the people say about Edhi? Secondly, Modi should have asked Edhi in private if they would accept the donation before announcing it. Bad move on Modi's part. And thanks to Edhi for their firm beliefs.

There are any number of Pakistani citizens who travel to Indian hospitals and get complex surgeries on Heart, Liver etc get done for free. Early this year an Indian surgery team had travelled to Pak hospital, performed surgery and helped Pakistani surgeons learn the surgical skills, again without any charges.It is sad the media do not report such news there.sigh.

Well , edhi has never took money from any state. He even refused donation from Pak government. when India offered donation, i was certain that it would be denied, as according to edhi, state help dilute the cause he stand for, as he believes, he should only use money donated to edhi trust from public, not government, regardless of the amount.

main part of the story is that edhi has helped the poor helpless girl called geeta and take care as even real parents cannot took care of her. now it's not matter that edhi has take donation or not. on the acid test of humanity many of us comments and talk but edhi has prove it by its action

The simple reason is Edhi Foundation never accepts donations from foreigners.They maintain this since the inception of this organisation.Modi as chief executive of India can recommend his name to nominate Noble peace award which is justified for his dignity.For which Prime Minister of Pakistan had been recommended earlier.

When a country grows nuclear its other paraphernalia naturally develops. As back on 1978 a great neuro- surgeon of south Asia Professor Jandha had visited Dhaka from Pakistan on a special plane to treat our national leader Mashiur Rahman Jadhu Mia. Pakistan establishes PG hospital at Shahbagh in Dhaka with a focus to treat kidney patients, now a full fledged medical university of multi disciplines with a new name.What Indians have done, this is an expression of a great humanitarian effort.Yes, for one thing Pakistanis can travel India or else where that is for lesser medical cost and relative better treatment .Many NRB visits our Dhaka from USA for a treatment of teeth,Kidney and relative common cancer diseases or cheque up every year.

Honesty of purpose, trust in God, and humility in social service are the sinews of an Islamic society. Edhi's polite way of declining the cash reflects the humility. I wish I could find more of such self-less example of service. Particularly the smile on the face of this girl as shown in the picture speaks volumes of her joy. No amount of money can buy such a smiling face. God bless such people doing a fine job for the sake of humanity at large.

@Aditya ... Money was declared by Modi and not any Indian NGO or welfare org. Secondly Modi should stop cross border shelling into Pak and too the populated areas. If not letting Kashmiris live independently at least stop the rape and killings in Kashmir. I am sure Edhi and your neighboring nations will be much thankful than your 1 crore rupees.

Edhi's rejection has NOTHING to do with whatever everyone is claiming here. It is simply a matter of Edhi Foundation principles and their take on not accepting donations from "a country." Edhi has never accepted donations from any international organizations, country or government (and this also includes Pakistan). It is quite sad (yet expected) to find out that everyone here is twisting the issue toward their own beliefs, religion, politics, and whatever pathetic agenda that has nothing to do with philanhtropy brilliance of Edhi.

What a shame for Pakistan that my VVIPs never ever thought of being instrumental in getting Noble Prize for Abdul Sattar Edhi or Edhi Foundation. Or should I construe that our VVIPs are so spineless that they have no say whatsoever in this regard. But isn't is very much surprising that the same VVIPs have the guts and say to borrow loans. At least I cannot find suitable adjectives to applaud what Abdul Sattar Edhi himself, his wife, his children and his foundation has done for humanity and that too without any personal gains. Please do not try and involve Mr Edhi with the jingoistic patriotism of Pakistan. He is above all that stupid stuff. In my opinion, I see a noble soul in Him, a Sufi Saint. He is the living equivalent of Shirdee Saibaba worshipped by Indians. We Indians believe that Godly qualities when manifest in a living being, that living being is elevated to a place of worship. That is the reason "Dargas" are frequently visited by Hindus.
