KARACHI: The Sindh government has appointed the Karachi police chief to “inquire and ascertain” the publication of advertisements from the law enforcement agency against “unknown Rangers officials” who allegedly picked up some half a dozen Orangi Town residents before they were declared “missing persons”, it emerged on Thursday.

The government move came up as a damage control measure after the ad in local dailies against the Rangers drew strong reaction from the paramilitary force that called it ‘a conspiracy against peace and a move to damage their public image’.

Sources privy to the Thursday development said the Sindh home department appointed Karachi police chief Mushtaq Ali Mahar after Rangers DG Major General Bilal Akbar in a meeting with Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah discussed the matter with him.

Other committee members included additional CTD IG Sanaullah Abbasi, DIG traffic Dr Ameer Sheikh with a representative of the Rangers not below the rank of lieutenant colonel, the source added.
