LAHORE: A two-day medical conference organised by the Post Graduate Medical Institute (PGMI) on “Parkinson and Movement disorder” concluded here on Monday.

Many foreign and national delegates, including renowned neuro surgeons and neurologists from Pakistan, attended the event.

Addressing the concluding session, PGMI Principal Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood said the medical research in Pakistan could touch new heights provided the government patronized it consistently.

He said the modern treatment center for Parkinson and other neuro complications, which has introduced Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) therapy for the first time in Pakistan at the Lahore General Hospital, could match any international institution by all standards.

He said the LGH Parkinson Centre carried out 16 DBS operations in less than one year period.

Prof Khalid, who is a pioneer in DBS treatment in Pakistan, elaborated various technical and professional points about 16 cases of Parkinson cases which he handled at the LGH Parkinson Center with the help of CDs.

He said that new horizons of research had been discovered with the start of DBS therapy. Young doctors should do more and more research on this method in order to provide relief to the ailing humanity.

He said that Parkinson patients had to bear an expenditure of around Rs10 million for their treatment abroad while in Pakistan this was possible only in Rs2 million.

He expressed the hope that the Parkinson Center at the LGH would help young doctors in becoming experts in this particular medical field.
