LAHORE: A Punjab Food Authority (PFA) team led by Director General Ayesha Mumtaz seized a large amount of suspected pig meat (pork) during a raid conducted near Lahore Railway Station.
The PFA DG Ayesha Mumtaz while talking to Dawn said that the raid was conducted on a tip off that pork is being supplied and sold in the city in the name of beef and mutton while pig fat was being used in the making of ice cream.
"The Chief Minister Punjab has ordered us to check the supply of carcass meat strictly after the previous instances of confiscation of donkey and horse meat. The supply has been seized and samples are sent to laboratory for a test to determine whether it is actually ‘pork’ or some other form of substandard meat," said the DG PFA.

The person carrying the supply was arrested and handed over to police for further investigation in order to nab the group involved in this heinous crime.

Pakistan, being an Islamic Republic has banned the sale/stock of pork in any sort or form as eating pig meat in any form is forbidden in Islam.

The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) has been going around Lahore fining, warning and sealing any establishment dealing with food that are found in 'unsatisfactory' (read unhygienic) conditions – from high-end, expensive restaurants to low-end, small food businesses.
The authority claims it is doing this to create awareness not only about the food people were being served, but also about hygiene, sanitation and cleanliness at restaurants, food factories and cafes.

Ayesha Mumtaz has tuned out to be a gem to eradicate misdemeanors and ill practices prevailing the food industry. I'd appreciate if the PFA introduces a department to give necessary skills to the prospective employees and enlarge their group responsible for inspection in a bid to precisely identify all such people.

It is my request to Miss Ayesha to come out of Lahore and you will be surprised even more. Miss Ayesha is a director but she want to visit every outlet on her own like a Maula Jatt style and as a result only Lahore is covered while the rest of Punjab is neglected. The director's duty is to organize the teams around Punjab and in that task she is failing miserably.

The only way pork meat can be available in Pakistan is through meat import from overseas because pork is not raised in Pakistan. Wild boars are present in our forests but it may not be economically feasible for the culprits to find, chase, hunt and supply the meat to the market. Also meat of wild animals have very distinctive taste. Pork meat is light in col0ur compared to mutton and beef and in west it is also called "the other white meat".
Either someone in making false accusations or this meat is being imported into the country illegally.

Great job Dr. Ayesha and team. A request to our chief minister Punjab. Sir, we are grateful to you for such initiative. However, unless the culprits are handed exemplary punishments this menace would never be eradicated from the society. A quick move for a legislation in this regard is a need of time.

@Khurram: Agree with you. Pork has a different texture compared to beef or lamb that it isn't possible to masquerade one for the other. Cooked pork smells and tastes different. The bones in pork are also easily distinguishable as they are smaller and brittle. Chasing a wild hog is also not easy. Either the PFA has made a mistake or there is more to this story.

steps taken by Punjab government as far as eatables, especially meat and milk are concerned, are praiseworthy. likewise steps taken by KPK government regarding police reforms are also manifestations of political will which had become a rare commodity in last decade. however questions are being raised about the performance of Sindh and Baluchistan governments. worst all is performance of Azad Jammu and Kashmir government. which is hub of unprecedented corruption and nepotism. ironically even media has paid no heed to poor performance of AJK regime.

All govt machinaries are invovleled in these province only and impressions are given that Punjab is doing well and only this province has maintained law order and everybody praising the good governess of Sharif brothers.
