LAHORE: A ticklish card of six events awaits race-goers when the 15th Lahore Summer Meeting gets under way at the Racecourse here on Sunday.

In all, 62 runners are to compete in the programme with three races having seven acceptors each while the remaining three have runners in double figure.

The handicap is so tight that in majority events winner picking may prove a difficult task for the punters.

In such closely handicapped races the race-goers should have to keep themselves abreast of horse’s true speed with inherent signs of courage and potential improvement and above all perfect soundness which are the basic requirement for the four-legged athlete.

Form is horse’s exposed ability on the racecourse in terms of recent past performance in races over a period not exceeding six weeks because it becomes difficult to maintain form over longer period.

A full appreciation of all these factors affecting a horse’s chance must have to be made and then backed.

In brief, one has to look at the recent form, which whether good or bad is a useful pointer one way or the other and old form which is always more suspect and needs up to date verification of fitness.

The study of form produces an essential background of the runners in a race without which one will be groping. Owners/trainers know it well.

It is advisable for the punters not to go racing unless one has time to take out all forms and then pick up who is the best choice in the handicap in every race, which is an expensive occupation.

Betting on horses has far too many imponderables and is ever full of risks and statistics show a punter is bound to lose in the end.

Therefore, the wisdom demands to take horse-racing as mere sports rather than an instrument to gambling, which undoubtedly fuel’s racing.

That’s why in Europe it is generally known that if there is “no gambling there will be no racing”.

The first race will be held at 3:00pm.
