SWABI: Induction of fresh students in the universities is always a cheerful occasion which marks the beginning of their journey to get new knowledge and prosperous future.

This was crux of the speeches delivered in the induction ceremony of the fresh students in Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology here on Saturday.

“In these young personalities I see the future of Pakistan,” said Higher Education Commission chairman Prof Mukhtar Ahmed, who was chief guest on the occasion. He said that the students could achieve their goal through hard work.

Engr Shamsul Mulk, president of the Society for the Promotion of Engineering Sciences and Technology in Pakistan, said that the driving force in the 21st century was the modern knowledge.

Jehangir Bashar, rector GIK Institute, said that the students would be given conditions conducive to their optimal growth, both in professional and personal terms.

He said that the GIK alumni were making their presence felt at home and abroad: in business, manufacturing and entrepreneurship. He lauded the financial assistance provided by the HEC for research and participation in international conferences.

Prof Dr Habibullah Jamal, pro-rector (academic), said that about 5,000 applications were received for different engineering disciplines this year and only 10 per cent of them had been selected. In the next four years, they would be fully equipped to meet any professional challenge, he said.

Later, Prof Mukhtar inaugurated the four research laboratories in the Faculty of Engineering Sciences. They were established with the funds provided by the HEC under the Pak-US project.

The laboratories include dye-sensitized solar cell fabrication laboratory, solar cell current voltage (I-V) characterization laboratory, solar cell transient photo voltage and photo current characterization laboratory, and laboratory for the design and simulation of molecular systems for efficient solar energy harvesting.
