NEW YORK: A New York man will serve 16 years in prison after admitting to attempting to support terrorists in Pakistan.

Agron Hasbajrami was sentenced Thursday at US District Court in Brooklyn.

Prosecutors say the 31-year-old man tried to travel to the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan in 2011 to join a radical jihadist insurgent group.

He is also accused of sending more than $1,000 to support terrorist activities in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Hasbajrami was arrested in September 2011 at John F. Kennedy International Airport with a one-way ticket to Turkey.

Authorities say he had spoken of his desire to die as a martyr.

Hasbajrami will be deported back to Albania, where he is a citizen, after his federal prison sentence. His attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Attempting to support terrorist? 16 years in prison very good law, why don't we in Pakistan do the same and believe me we won't have any terrorist or even politicians who support terrorist will end up in prison but for politicians 20 years.

Most people are in prison because they did something stupid. He will be out in eight years. That is still a long time to think about the path he chose. Terrorism is not a do over.

Mind it that he was just a supporter. What if same punishment would be given to him in India. You can see hue and cry from so-called seculars and liberals. irony is they see get every clue of secularism from America only.
