TOBA TEK SINGH: The elder son turned out to be the murderer of his father, former MPA Rao Muhammad Iqbal, and younger brother Rao Athar Iqbal at Chak 670/11-GB on Tuesday.

Both the father and the son were found shot dead in their Pirmahal house on Monday, which the earlier family sources said Athar had ended his life when during a scuffle, his pistol went off and a bullet hit Iqbal who died at once.

Police were alerted that there were some disputes among the family over property.

Rao Azhar Iqbal, the elder son of the former MPA, was interrogated and soon he confessed that he had murdered his father and brother.

District Police Officer Rana Shahzad Akbar said he had formed a team of expert police officials when he was informed by insiders of the Rao family that Azhar had in fact murdered his father and brother.

Pirmahal police registered on Tuesday a case under section 302 of the Pakistan Penal Code against Azhar on the complaint of Pirmahal Station House Officer Akhtar Saeed.

The DPO told reporters in the Pirmahal police station that Azhar was a drug addict.

The DPO added that police had seized Rs32,000 and 29 intoxicating injections from Azhar. He had stolen the money from the pockets of his father and brother after their murder.

Area people say Azhar was demanding from his father his share in farms located in Vehari and Toba Tek Singh districts.

Thousands of people attended the funeral prayer of both Iqbal and Athar in their native village chak 670/11 GB and dozens of people were seen crying on the occasion.

Iqbal contested the last election for PP-89 in 2008 on a PPP ticket and remained a runner-up.

He was the son of former MLA Rao Sahib Dad Khan.
