LAHORE: The brother of a PML-N MNA and his five guards allegedly shot at and injured two women and as many children, including a two-month-old girl, in Batapur on Monday.

Manawan DSP Qaiser Butt told Dawn that Rajput and Naee (barber) clans of Baseen village clashed with each other over a minor dispute, involving damage to a motorcycle of the Rajputs, in which four people, including two children of Naee clan, were injured.

MNA Sohail Shaukat Butt intervened and convinced both the groups to reach reconciliation. However, some members of Rajput clan, who were not satisfied with the reconciliation, gathered in the village and started protesting against the MNA for favouring Naee clan.

Some of the protesters reportedly used abusive language against the MNA. This infuriated Zohaib Butt, brother of the ruling party legislator, who along with his five guards reached the spot and opened fire on the protesters, injuring two women and two children.

The injured were identified as Sameen Akhtar, 55, Shumaila, 23, Shahnawaz, 8, and two-month-old Shumaita.

The injured were taken to the Services Hospital where their condition was stated to be out of danger.

Batapur police registered two separate cases, one against the brother of MNA and his gunmen and other against Talib Husain and his accomplices for torturing Naee clan.

Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif took notice of the incident and directed police to arrest the suspects involved in the firing, seeking a report from CCPO Amin Wains on the incident.
