'KP Ehtesab Commission to move against all corrupt, even if it's Imran'

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Ehtesab Commission will even act against Imran Khan if he is found guilty of corruption, says the director general of the provincial accountability body – lieutenant general (r) Hamid Khan – talking exclusively to Dawn.com.

Giving details on the functioning of the Ehtesab Commission, Hamid Khan says the bureau deals with all cases on merit and does not accept any pressure from the government or anyone else.

Talking about the arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf mines minister Ziaullah Afridi, Khan says the minister was arrested after thorough investigation. "The Ehtesab Commission gathered enough evidence of corruption before acting against him."

The director general of the Ehtesab Commission dismissed the impression that the commission was acting in haste to arrest high-profile personalities. Hamid Khan says the commission deals with corruption cases expeditiously because it is a newly formed body and has no backlog to take care of — hence the speedy completion of tasks.

According to Hamid Khan, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Ehtesab Commission was established to overcome weaknesses in the National Accountability Bureau. NAB, he says, offers culprits an opportunity in the form of a plea bargain.

“But the Ehtesab Commission does not provide such opportunities to those who have looted the national exchequer.”

Well done IK for empowering institutions in KPK. People need to understand that IK is not perfect, no one is in today's world. He will make mistakes but what matters is his intent which is good and sincere for Pakistan. The progress may be slow but at least he is trying. So instead of criticizing him all the time which would lower his morale, support him so that he tries to improve our conditions with greater motivation. Point out mistakes but don't demoralize him. I will always support IK because only a patriotic person would leave a luxurious life in UK to serve his homeland.

Salute to IK and his party. .. while I appreciate his efforts and sincerity, I do believe Ehtesab commission of KP should reconsider the option of plea bargain. This may save time for the prosecutor and avoid lengthy trials. The weakness of NAB is not because of the plea bargain clause; but is due to fact that it is not free from political pressure.
