SRINAGAR: A woman was allegedly stripped naked by a gang of five persons, including an Indian army soldier, in Udhampur district of India-held Kashmir, according to a report on Hindustan Times website.

"A woman was stripped in full public view by five persons in Jaganoo area of Udhampur," Udhampur District Commissioner said.

“The woman was intercepted by the gang as she was riding pillion on a motorcycle. When she resisted, the accused overpowered her and stripped her publicly,” added the District Commissioner.

A video of the incident was also recorded by the accused, which has since gone viral on messaging service, Whatsapp.

Police have registered a case and has started its investigation, claiming to have arrested three persons. One of the accused is believed to be an Indian army soldier.

Kashmir is divided between India and Pakistan but both claim the whole of the region.

Residents in India-held Kashmir strongly favour a merger with Pakistan or independence. Several militant groups have operated in the region since an insurgency erupted in 1989. The Indian army has been known to commit excesses in its fight against the militants.

An estimated 68,000 people have died in the fighting and ensuing crackdown by Indian forces. Resentment over Indian rule in the disputed region is now mostly expressed through street protests.
