CHARSADDA: The district administration on Tuesday raided the town’s bazaars and arrested 20 shopkeepers for overpricing and selling expired food items.

Additional deputy commissioner Charsadda Mir Akbar Khan and other officials visited the bazaars and inspected bakeries, general stores, butchers, fruit and vegetable shops.

The raiding officials found some traders selling expired edible items, including beverages, sweets and biscuits, and took 20 shopkeepers into custody.

The officials also directed traders to follow pricelists issued for the month of Ramazan, and maintain quality of goods and cleanliness around their shops.

Akbar Khan warned that the violators of the directives would be sent behind bars in addition to imposing heavy fines on them.

ROBBER KILLED: An alleged robber was killed in an exchange of fire with police following an armed robbery in the limits of Charsadda city police station. However, two of his accomplices managed to escape with the looted Rs1 million.

Niaz Gul, resident of Purdil Abad, informed police that he was on his way home on his motorcycle when unidentified armed men riding two bikes intercepted him, and on gunpoint took away Rs1 million, Saudi Riyals, a pistol and a mobile phone from him.

A police party headed by SHO Charsadda gave a chase to robbers and engaged them in exchange of fire near Atmanzai area, wherein one of dacoits, Arshad Ali, resident of Tangai, was killed, while his other accomplices managed to escape from the scene.

Police recovered Saudi Riyals and snatched pistol and mobile from the dead robber.

SHO Charsadda city Ijaz told Dawn police would soon nab the runaway dacoits.
