Rangers chief asks Ulema to report forced Zakat collection

KARACHI: Pakistan Rangers, Sindh, chief Major General Bilal Akbar has assured clerics of all-out efforts to maintain peace in the city during Ramazan and sought their support, urging them to report at the Rangers Helpline any illegal activity including forced collection of Zakat and Fitrana, according to a statement issued on Wednesday.
At a meeting held at Rangers Headquarters with a delegation of clerics from different schools of thought, the Rangers DG briefed them about security arrangements made by the paramilitary force in coordination with police for Ramazan.
“The Rangers DG apprised the Ulema about the decrease in targeted killings and other heinous crimes,” said the Rangers statement. “They were also told about the security arrangements made by the Rangers in coordination with police for Ramazan. The Rangers DG urged the Ulema to display exemplary interfaith harmony and solidarity during the holy month.”
He also urged them to report at Rangers Helpline 1101 any illegal activity including forced collection of Zakat and Fitrana.
Maj Gen Akbar assured the Ulema that he would leave no stone unturned for a peaceful Ramazan.
“The Ulema showed satisfaction over the Rangers performance and said that they would fully support Rangers actions against criminals including individuals involved in forced collection of Zakat and Fitrana,” added the statement.

Pakistan is only county mixing religion & army everywhere including administration, politics, education and policy making. This is not good for any democracy. These two should be kept aside.

I remember pre 1970 when some people used to favour LEA and talk against democracy and the elected leaders and we know the results.Nowadays it is the same situation.
Corruption has been in Pakistan since beginning and all are involved,the difference is the extent of level.Therefore,all institutions must work for strengthening of democracy within their precribed roles and good governance. We must jointly work against corruption practices and all efforts be made to develop Pakistan.

Every Karachiite knows who is collecting as extortion, Fitra, Zakat and hides and skins, though many of them have started claiming this collection to be voluntary.

@Factual . Dear I think democracy is not as important as is the proper management of affairs. If democratic leaders have failed to perform their duty properly then such democracy should be sidelined to gain better results. Anything which benefits people is good for people, be it democracy or "Armycracy".

Very good step. Another thing that should be included is that the forced pressure on people by a particular evangelical party to join their ranks and go on Tableegh should also be reported and stopped.

why don't we educate our people to give Zakat to the rightful and needy... why do we need a middle man... Where there is charity and wisdom, there is neither fear nor ignorance. my advice to all the people take the matter in your own hand and charity wisely to those who deserves it.

In my humble opinion the government should pass a law that NO BODY WOULD VISIT ANYONE FOR COLLECTION OF ZAKAT, FITRA OR DONATION, the religious and Political parties should post a CAMP in the entire City for the collection of donation in the month of Ramazan and let the people decide to whom and which religious and political parties they wish to donate rather then to visit and force them to donate no matter they got the receipt, since they force them for donation therefore it become extortion money which they used for terrorists activities.

@Dr faizan maybe democracy hasnt given anything to Pakistan but there are a lot of countries in the world that swear by democracy and are truly democratic.All countries are not Pakistan and all the citizens of the world outside Pakistan don't act or think like Pakistanis.

The problem is that even if we rely on so called democracy then we will see that a resolution is passed to curb the crime. Then you will see the democratically elected Chief Minister saying that all is well in Sindh, everything under control. The thing is there is no one who can ensure that law is followed or adhered. Unfortunately our police is so democratic that it cant do the job at large, hence the army and rangers come in the equation. Since the situation had been so out of hand, army had to be called in as the country is dealing with professional terrorists and criminals. Democracy is what these political parties shout about and see what they have accomplished. Mr 10% and the famous 'saaien'.
