Jirga ‘convicts’ 10-year-old boy of extramarital affair

SUKKUR: A 10-year-old boy was convicted by a tribal court (jirga) of having an extramarital affair and his family was ordered to pay a fine of Rs700,000 to the aggrieved side.

The matter had sparked a rivalry between the Bakhrani and Banglani communities living in Nihal Bakhrani village near Tangwani town of Kandhkot-Kashmore district. The aggrieved side took the matter to the jirga headed by a tribal elder, Jehangir Banglani, on Monday.

Mr Banglani, along with his aides, heard arguments from both sides and held the 10-year-old boy, Taimoor Banglani, guilty of having an extramarital affair with a girl belonging to a Bakhrani family. The Banglani family was ordered to pay a fine of Rs700,000. The guilty side paid Rs50,000 on the spot and undertook to pay off the remaining fine money within three months.

How could a 10 year old get married? Just curious on how old the poor girl will be? If they could agree to pay a fine of 700000, they must be a well to do family. Strange cases.

@Tarannum S. The customs of tribal people are very complicated and stupid. They imposed a fine of 7lac and if other family doesn't pay there is going to be a war which will carry on for generations.

This is not only an insult to Pakistan but for the Muslims elsewhere too. Who has the guts to scrap this barbaric system? I have become really allergic to hear the word 'jirga'! Can anyone contemplate what could be the reason behind such cases? In my opinion, growing obscenity in the society is the underlying cause which is due to lack of education plus the environment in which they are grown up. The former should be taken care of at the schools and the latter is the primary responsibility of the parents. Parents should teach their children the difference between good and evil. By doing so such obscene cases could be significantly reduced if not eliminated root and branch.

Extramarital affair means that the boy was already married. Wonder how old was he when he first got married. If he is having an extramarital "affair" NOT "sex" then they should force him to take this one as second wife instead of imposing a financial penalty.

The boy apparently was not married.How come this was a case of extramarital nature.This was a case of a child with extra developed instincts to ward opposite gender as also the girl.The parents of both the children need support and expert help.Penalty certainly won't help.
